Although I typically look forward to having fun and unwinding during vacation, I often take time to reflect on how blessed I am to embark on these experiences. Especially when just 10 short years ago I drove a vehicle during the winter with no heat, frequented the food bank and briefly had to rely on government assistance to take care of my family. Despite all this I remained humble, kept my head high and often had a smile on my face.
I make it a point now that when I visit a new destination I pay it forward and put a smile on someone else's face. This past year I was in NOLA celebrating my daughter's 21st birthday with my family. Walking down the strip daily there was this homeless gentleman that would joke with us each time we past. I admit the first few times I didn't pay him much attention as we were trying to get to the next oyster bar. However, one day in particular he stood out in the sea of people on Bourbon St. Regardless of his situation I noticed he had a smile on his face everytime I seen him and was always telling a good joke. So this day we stopped, my family and I took time to have a conversation with him. He introduced himself as King David along with his dog Penelope. The entire time we talked, laughed, embraced with hugs and shared stories as I thought to myself what an amazing individual. He even taught my 9 year old daughter how to play the xylophone right on the streets of New Orleans. Something she'll never forget!
He really touched our souls! I told King David to sit tight as I went back to our resort and we would come back in 20 minutes. We returned with food, beverages, clothing and cash for him but most of all our love and friendship I then handed him my brand new Retro Jordan 3's and told him these are for you. He burst out in tears, ran in the middle of the street and came back with the biggest hug. Although he was beyond excited I continued to tell him how much light he brought into our lives.
