⛳️ Golfing around the runway in Shelter cove?? Yes, why not! Seadance even has several sets of clubs for your use and it is literally just steps away.

So many options of things to do here.

Another great adventure to share today. Ok, I’ll admit it we didn’t actually do all the exercises at each station. 🙃

Update 8:00am: swells are building and starting to splash up over the bluff on the lot to the north side of us. 8:15 waves are now coming up and around fire pit. 8:30 waves crashing up at neighboring houses. Photo by Stephanie Andrews
11:15: Updated from folks at the Seadance that we are on the backside of high tide and currently all is good. Whew.

Friends of the Seadance: So far all is good at the house. Yesterday windows were boarded up, patio furniture was stored and our wonderful friend & PM Stephanie and Jason stayed overnight at the house in case the winds and or predicted 30 foot waves caused damage. Fortunately so far all is good. Stephanie and Jason sent this morning surf report. It’s high surf but nothing out of the ordinary for a storm. Grateful to all who love and care for the Seadance - thank you!

Thank you for the inquiries about the Seadance. I’m told there was not any damage. It sounds like it was a rolling quake in the Cove and shook people up. No road damage that I’ve heard about and while the power had gone out, the cove has generator back up so we had power restored pretty quickly. I’m grateful to the resort district for installing those generators, our friend and property manager for running down in the middle of the night to check the house and the community that looks out for its people.

I was recently snorkeling in Maui and had the fun experience of watching an octopus move about changing colors as it moved across the coral. They are fascinating creatures.

Free movie night, hosted by planet earth and the cosmos, weather permitting…😉

In the pre-dawn hours of November 12, 1833, the sky over North America seemed to explode with falling stars. Unlike anything anyone had ever seen before, and visible over the entire continent, an Illinois newspaper reported “the very heavens seemed ablaze.” An Alabama newspaper described “thousands of luminous bodies shooting across the firmament in every direction.” Observers in Boston estimated that there were over 72,000 “falling stars” visible per hour during the remarkable celestial storm.

The Lakota people were so amazed by the event that they reset their calendar to commemorate it. Joseph Smith, traveling with Mormon refugees, noted in his diary that it was surely a sign of the Second Coming. Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, and Harriet Tubman, among many others, described seeing it. It became known as “The Night the Stars Fell.”

So, what was this amazing occurrence?

Many of those who witnessed it interpreted it as a sign of the Biblical end times, remembering words from the gospel of St. Mark: “And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken.” But Yale astronomer Denison Olmsted sought a scientific explanation, and shortly afterwards he issued a call to the public—perhaps the first scientific crowd-sourced data gathering effort. At Olmsted’s request, newspapers across the country printed his call for data: “As the cause of ‘Falling Stars’ is not understood by meteorologists, it is desirable to collect all the facts attending this phenomenon, stated with as much precision as possible. The subscriber, therefore, requests to be informed of any particulars which were observed by others, respecting the time when it was first discovered, the position of the radiant point above mentioned, whether progressive or stationary, and of any other facts relative to the meteors.”

Olmsted published his conclusions the following year, the information he had received from lay observers having helped him draw new scientific conclusions in the study of meteors and meteor showers. He noted that the shower radiated from a point in the constellation Leo and speculated that it was caused by the earth passing through a cloud of space dust. The event, and the public’s fascination with it, caused a surge of interest in “citizen science” and significantly increased public scientific awareness.

Nowadays we know that every November the earth passes through the debris in the trail of a comet known as Tempel-Tuttle, causing the meteor showers we know as the Leonids. Impressive every year, every 33 year or so they are especially spectacular, although very rarely attaining the magnificence of the 1833 event.

The Leonid meteor showers are ongoing now and are expected to peak on November 18. But don’t expect a show like the one in 1833. This year at its peak the Leonids are expected to generate 15 “shooting stars” per hour.

November 12, 1833, one hundred eighty-nine years ago today, was “The Night the Stars Fell.”

We have the best group of awesome people who help us keep the Seadance looking beautiful. We are blessed and grateful to have each one of them with us.

Our wonderful garden fairy worked her magic and surprised us with a fisherman. Love it, her and the care and love she gives to the Seadance.

Always a good reminder when near the shore on the coast.

DYK that each year rip currents are responsible for over 80,000 rescues by U.S. Lifeguards, and approximately 100 drowning fatalities?

🌊 If you’re heading to the coast this holiday weekend, please take some time to learn about the dangers of rip currents and pay attention to signage posted in the parks advising of dangers.

🏊 If caught in a rip current, stay calm and don’t fight it. Escape the current by swimming parallel to shore. When free of the current, swim away from the rip at an angle toward shore. If you feel you will be unable to reach shore, draw attention to yourself by facing the shore and calling and waving for help.

💻 To learn more about rip currents, visit www.parks.ca.gov/OceanSafety.
