Happy Montgolfier Day! What is Montgolfier Day you ask? To all our non-ballooning friends, today is the anniversary of the first manned balloon flight 240 years ago! On November 21, 1783. Two French aristocrats (valiantly taking the place of condemned prisoners) climbed aboard a silken, smoke-filled hot-air balloon designed & built by the Montgolfier brothers of Annonay, France. These were the first human beings to depart the surface of our earth, and all of Paris turned out to watch, including King Louis and American ambassador Benjamin Franklin. The world was forever changed. Today is a sacred day for us balloonatics...this calls for champagne!

Happy anniversary of the birth of ballooning! Brought to you by the Montgolfiere brothers in France!

On 19 September 1783, their balloon Aerostat Réveillon was flown with the first (non-human) living creatures in a basket attached to the balloon: a sheep called Montauciel ("Climb-to-the-sky"), a duck and a rooster.[15][16] The sheep was believed to have a reasonable approximation of human physiology. The duck was expected to be unharmed by being lifted aloft. It was included as a control for effects created by the aircraft rather than the altitude. The rooster was included as a further control as it was a bird that did not fly at high altitudes. This demonstration was performed before a crowd at the royal palace in Versailles, before King Louis XVI of France and Queen Marie Antoinette.[15] The flight lasted approximately eight minutes, covered two miles (3 km), and obtained an altitude of about 1,500 feet (460 m). The craft landed safely after flying.[15] (from https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_ballooning)

🎈 First Balloon Flight! On this day in 1783, the Montgolfières brothers showcased the magic of flight at Versailles! (Link to the full story in the comments)Their balloon, Aerostat Réveillon, carried a unique trio to the skies: a sheep named Montauciel, a duck, and a rooster. These creatures took to the air in an experiment that hoped to understand the effects of flight on living beings. Their 8-minute journey spanned 2 miles and reached altitudes of 1,500 feet, all under the watchful eyes of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette. Here’s to celebrating the marvels of early aviation! 🎉

📢 UPDATE📢

Due to the forecast with wet weather, low cloud ceilings, and less-than-optimal conditions for ballooning, we will not be able to fly for tomorrow morning’s L&N Federal Credit Union Great Balloon Rush Hour Race.

We still have two more opportunities to see hot air balloons on the schedule. The Glow (4/28 at 9 p.m.) and Saturday's Great Balloon Race (4/29 at 7 a.m.) are still set to go on as scheduled.

Stay tuned for any additional updates.
