The USS Perry was a Clemson-class Destroyer of the US Navy that met her fate carrying out patrol and minesweeping duties during WWII.⁠
⁠
💣️On September 13, 1944, she scraped a mine less than a mile from Angaur Island, Palau, and the subsequent explosion resulted in her sinking to 78m/255feet. ⁠
⁠
The wreck of the USS Perry was discovered on May 9, 2000, and ⁠ were lucky enough to dive her in 2022.⁠
⁠

🇯🇵As the largest wreck in Truk Lagoon, the Heian Maru is a spectacular dive with a fascinating history. At 510 feet in length and weighing over 11,600 tons, this luxury passenger liner was requisitioned at the start of WWII by the Imperial Japanese Navy and converted into a submarine tender to support the war effort.

It was sunk in 1942 on the second day of Operation Hailstone, and today is one of the most photographed wrecks in the world.⁠

🌅It’s 05:14 am on the 17th of February, 1944. ⁠
⁠
35 Task Force 58 planes take off from the American aircraft carrier Essex. The planes are loaded with 500 and 1000-pound armor piercing bombs. The first raid is about to begin. Half an hour before, eleven Hellcats had already reached their target for an initial sweep at the 4th Fleet Anchorage, making the job of the bombers effortless. ⁠
⁠
At 7 am, a bomb with a delay fuse is dropped on the Nippo Maru, blowing a large hole in the ship, flooding the engine room, and sinking it immediately. Operation Hailstone has begun. The Naval Task Force, armed with over 500 aircraft, attacks the lagoon for 48 hours straight, decimating over 50 vessels and 250 aircraft. The biggest wreck diving ghost fleet in the world is created.⁠

🗺️ In 1969, renowned French oceanographer, Jacques Cousteau, brought international attention to Truk Lagoon with his documentary "Lagoon of Lost Ships." ⁠
⁠
During his expedition, Cousteau and his team explored the lagoon's underwater wrecks, showcasing the unique blend of history and marine life. Truk Lagoon was revealed as a diver's paradise and from then on increased in significance as a world's ultimate wreck diving destination.⁠
