Christmas Bird Walk

We held a bird walk yesterday. Here is a report from FSPR docent Steve Tracey on the results.

Happy Holidays Birders,

It was a beautiful sunny, calm and not too cold Christmas morning at San Pedro House for the bird walk today. We had a nice crowd of 15 birders and managed to find 40 species walking a loop through the trails. Our most notable bird was probably a continuing Gilded Flicker that perched for a bit next to a Northern Flicker providing a good color comparison between the two.

What really stood out today were the high numbers of sparrows and finches. We had over 200 White-crowned Sparrows, by far the most numerous sparrow. Lesser Goldfinches were everywhere but a bit more surprising were the numbers of Pine Siskins nearly matching that of the goldfinches. A few Lark Buntings thrown in provided some good looks as they foraged in the trail right in front of the group.

The Friends of The San Pedro River lead birding walks on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. For January and February the walks start at 8:00 AM. The walks start at the San Pedro House located off SR 90 just west of the San Pedro River. Bring your own binoculars, a hat and water. The walks last about 3 hours.

The next San Pedro House birding walk is on Wednesday January 8 at 8:00 AM.

If you'd like to enjoy the holiday in the park, please note that our picnic area and bathrooms will be open, but the visitor center will be closed on December 25th and January 1st. Maps will be available at the front entrance of the visitor center.

Get Out of the House!

Coming up tomorrow we have two activities. 1. We will staff Murray Springs Clovis site from 10 to 1 to allow vehicle and visitor access to the site. 2. One of our great FSPR docents will lead a walk from Fairbank to the ruins of the Grand Central Mill, where silver ore from Tombstone mines was processed. Both are free and open to all.
