Update: There is basically no cell service or spotty at best but where we are we can hook up to the internet. A neighbor is on the key and posted that the storm surge appears to be about 1 1/2 feet less than Helene. We’ve reached out on messenger to see if and how much damage our house has suffered. Prayers work! To take on a direct hit with a cat 3 and get initial reports like we’ve gotten is an absolute miracle. We’ll get over when we can and provide another update. Mike and Donna

Update....We personally are fine, The worst of the weather has passed where we are staying. Winds were crazy! Siesta was official landfall. Unreal. The worst of the surge is yet to come tonight. We will be anxious to get home, when allowed back on Siesta at some point. Praying hard that we still have a house and our beautiful key is not destroyed. Thank you all for the sweet and concerned texts. They kept our spirits up ❤️❤️

Acceptance of what appears to be the inevitable. I’m know our emotions are no different than everyone else’s facing this. We’ve all heard the saying that life can change in an instant but the reality is just that. At the end of the day all you have is the moment you are in. The best laid plans are just a dream, a wish and a hope. We have zero control and in times like this you realize that. We will all carry on and despite this we will continue to dream, to hope and to plan only now we will do so with the realization that only Jesus Christ himself is in control ,which we really have known all along. I give thanks to God for the past 8+ years we have lived on this beautiful island .Siesta Key/Sarasota is our home and is filled with some of the most wonderful people we have ever encountered. Donna and I share the grief, the fear, the despair everyone else is experiencing at this very moment. But during the past couple of days we have also laughed, we’ve dreamed, we’ve talked about the future. We have experienced the outpouring of love and concern from so many friends and family, it cheers us up and encourages us. Love really is EVERYTHING. In just a few hours is when things will start to go downhill. Like everyone else we are hunkered down where we are going to be, just waiting for this to be over. Afterwards we will all emerge from our homes, hotels and shelters and look around in a state of disbelief. We’ll cry, we’ll hold onto one another, we’ll be comforted by others and we’ll be a comfort to others. I guarantee you that we will also laugh and we’ll shed tears of joy just to see others we love who have gone through the exact same thing. None of us will have the ability to communicate with anyone for a period of time and that will be very hard on friends and family in other parts of the country. It’s going to be hard, we will all get through. We’ll continue to plan, to dream, to laugh, to love. God bless everyone reading this post, continue to pray. The tone might not be as somber had we not just experienced the unbelievable surge that was brought on by Helene just a few days ago. The fact that a passing cat 3 over 100 miles from shore could cause the damage it did is front and center in the minds of everyone in the path of this storm. Please hold us all in your prayers and we will provide an update when possible. Right now we are with friends in a house full of cats, our old blind dog and a baby boy full of energy and curiosity. Life goes on, as we shall too

No pictures of families having fun this time. Latest projected path has seen a shift to the south. If we can avoid the eye wall and have the system pass to our south we will be significantly better off. Donna and I appreciate everyone who has checked in on us, we always evacuate every time, not worth taking a chance. We appreciate any and all prayers you can lift to Christ our Savior not just for us but additionally for the millions who have and will be impacted. We have experienced the kindness and love of everyone in our community and when we begin to feel down we think of those who have fared so much worse. We hope that Christ blesses, protects, uplifts and provides according to his will.
