Rare quartz crystal point dates to the earliest Native Americans in Hot Springs.

One of the highlights of the 2001 Annual Meeting of the Arkansas Archeological Society in Hot Springs was when Toby Morrow and Julie Morrow recorded a very special artifact in the collection of AI Sargent. On September 6, 1953, AI Sargent’s grandfather found this quartz crystal CIovis point at site 3GA14 near Blakely Mountain Dam in Garland County. CIovis points date to between 10,900 and 1l,500 radiocarbon years before present date but in calendar years are probably at least l,000 or more years older.

The term “Paleoindian” refers to a time 13,500 years ago (11,500 BC) at the end of the last ice age when the first traces of humans appeared in the archaeological record in North America. One of the first groups to enter the New World was the Clovis culture.
The Clovis people encountered many species of now extinct, large terrestrial animals and hunted them with spears tipped with stone points; these animals, dubbed “megafauna” because of their larger size when compared to modern forms, included the mastodon, mammoth, horse, tapir, ground sloth, giant bison, giant beaver, giant tortoise, American lion, short-faced bear, and saber-toothed tiger. The fossilized remains of many of these now extinct animals have been found in Arkansas, including a mastodon tooth at Magnet Cove and remains of other animals in the Ouachita River.

There will be dealers with rough rocks, cut rocks, polished rocks, sparkly rocks. Fossils, minerals and gemstones are also possibilities. There will be jewelry from rocks, home décor from rocks, and dealers who will just love to talk about rocks.

The OSCMS will sponsor a live auction on Saturday at 11:30 am. Everyone is welcome and can bid. Proceeds from this auction goes to support the OSCMS Scholarship Fund, giving a boost to a deserving Junior or Senior student at an Oklahoma higher education school with an earth sciences major.
All donations for the Auction are most welcome
