When is early season snow dangerous? If Colorado's early snow storms are followed by long stretches of cold, dry weather before the next storm, the snow grains can break down into facets, or “sugar snow.” These unbonded, sugary crystals can create weak layers in our snowpack that can last the whole winter and plague us with instabilities – the cause of many avalanches. Winter is here! Here is a snowpack update from one of our own, Justin Ibarra

Toured today in the Vail/Summit County area with partner . Overcast skies with calm winds and S1-S2 snowfall through early afternoon. Traveled from 10,600ft to 11,900ft on WSW and SW'ly aspects. HS ranged from 30-35cm at lower elevations to about 60-65cm at 10,800ft and then decreased again, nearing a ridgeline at 11,900ft. Skied 2 laps on WSW'ly slope and 1 lap on more SW aspect. Soft surface conditions and on some lower elevation, steeper and more open slopes we found a 1-2cm sun or melt freeze crust roughly 10cm down. Elsewhere this was not present and there was no major noticeable or concerning layering until we encountered minor collapsing near ridelines with wind loaded snow. Overall a great early season tour. Let it snow, let it snow!!

What's the most dangerous position to be in when your group tours in the backcountry? First. In this Safety Academy slide, we see that >90% of skier-triggered avalanches happen when the first person enters the slope. Also, choosing slopes with angles less than 30 degrees avoids most avalanches. Register for our free Avy Savvy clinics to learn more basics.
