New - Salt Lick Tuesdays! We made available a public snowshoeing half-day trip options Tuesdays at 8 am and 1 pm for only $99/person. We'll take the crowd-pleasing Salt Lick Trail just out our door in Silverthorne. Full day and other days of the week continue to be private, fully customizable trips. Part of Red Mountain Open Space, Salt Lick Trail is suitable for most. Our Avy 101 Clinic is not too much science, no warnings to stay out of the mountains, no formulas to memorize. But after an hour, you'll understand better when and why destructive avalanches happen. Learn tips to have fun while avoiding avalanches, & about resources for making smart backcountry decisions. Discuss gear, using the forecast, and avenues for backcountry education. The State of the Snowpack tracks the weather this winter and explores its effects traveling and recreating on snow in the backcountry. Although not a science-based course, we discuss why we track storms and analyze snowpack regularly. Attendees learn about the current snowpack, how it got that way, and effects of future snow.

NEWS: The app now has a daily avalanche map overlay. Screenshot is hiking trails with the avy map overlaid. Available for free, COTREX, the Colorado Trail Explorer app, bills itself as the most comprehensive trail map for the state. It is built atop data from over 230 trail managers. Another cool thing: free version lets you download maps to use where there's no cell coverage. Also cool - if you provide updates the trail managers use them. Download at your app store of choice.

WHAT: Learn to identify and avoid avalanche terrain. Participants form touring groups, and use guided exercises to choose a tour that fits the conditions and minimizes avalanche risk. Groups use ORTOVOX’s SAM3D Mountain model as an interactive learning tool to demonstrate avalanche terrain and to simulate tour planning. Participants identify avalanche terrain, interpret and apply an avalanche forecast to their mountain model, and draw and explain their route.
