That golden hour glow. Another beautiful sunset in Sister Bay with the most beautiful girl in the world. One of the best perks about having this company is that it allows me to spend every day with this amazing lady and my schedule allows her the best life in her twilight years at nearly 14.5! With these crazy temperatures, we have a PSA for you tonight. As some of you know, we do severe weather and weekly house checks for our second home owners.

I checked on clients homes today to make sure that the cabinet doors were open on all the sinks on exterior walls. I also started a slow dribble out of all faucets on exterior walls. I flushed the toilets and ran the sinks at full speed.

I do these things to prevent the drain and waterlines freezing in those exterior walls to warm them up and get the water moving. It is also because when it is so cold outside, well lines, running to the house have the risk of freezing up causing major repair issues.

I checked the heat and made sure there was plenty of propane. After checking houses all day long, the very last house was way up north. I texted with the owner asking her if they would like me to go check it. She wasn’t sure that they needed it so I asked them a very important question. Do they have baseboard heaters and are they on? She said they have them, but they don’t use them because they have what are called wall mounted mini splits pictured below.

Working for a general contractor for the last seven years, I have heard him tell this cautionary tale hundreds of times in new homes and remodels. The units on your wall that look like this are great for most of the year, but they cannot keep up with the extreme weather, both hot and cold. After hearing the baseboards were off, I decided to go to the house. It was not even 50° inside, and the house is not winterized/drained for the year. If I hadn’t have gone to this brand new home to check the heat, we would’ve had burst pipes and a huge mess.
