Amazing news for the ocean: after more than a decade of talks, the United Nations has agreed the world’s first treaty to protect the high seas! 🎉 🐳

The high seas are areas beyond national jurisdiction, meaning they're not owned by any nation. Although they account for two-thirds of the ocean, only 1% of the high seas are currently protected, leaving the ecosystems in these waters open to exploitation from overfishing and other damaging activities.

The treaty includes an agreement to protect 30% of these international waters by 2030, although the level of protection is so far not resolved.

Agreeing this treaty is a huge achievement but is just the first step – next, we need to see countries working together to implement and properly enforce the new measures. We hope that the result will be a network of connected Marine Protected Areas across the ocean, so that migratory whales can be fully protected.

Friend: “I love your outfit!”
Me: Thanks! It has pockets!

Did you know sea otters have flaps of loose skin under each forearm that they use like a pocket? What are these pockets full of? (Well, it's not sunshine.)

When swimming, the pockets are used to carry as much food as possible back to the surface. Think buffet f***y pack. It’s not pocket science. Or is it?

Hot pocket! Otters also use their pockets to stash rocks to crack open clams, crabs and other shellfish with on their tummies. (Tummies is the scientific term. Wanna fight about it?) They may also use rocks to hammer abalone shells, as quickly as 45 times in 15 seconds (hammer time!), until the abalone loosen their tight grip on the seafloor. The ones left behind are left, well, abalonely. ☹️

Have rock, will travel. Many otters have a favorite rock that they keep in their pocket. My buddy and me! Kid sister? Some even name their rocks. Popular names include: Otter Destruction, Gneiss Knowing You⁣, King Clammer⁣, Rockslayer, and Fred. Research is still pending. Rock on.

There are about 15 scattered around the sound and I’m sure more on the way.

In the fall, many humpbacks make their way to Sitka Sound - their last stop before heading south to breed in the warm waters of Hawaii

Great Things Happen When You Combine Beauty With Passion

Sitka’s premier eco-tour expedition company! Our experienced and knowledgeable naturalists and photographers lead group and private tours on small, comfortable boats. Space is extremely limited, usually to no more than six guests, so that tours can explore without disrupting animals’ natural behaviors. Guides enthusiastically share information about animal behavior and the area’s natural history, as well as answer questions and provide artistic and technical guidance and mentoring on photography tours. Hear what whales actually sound like when they communicate via our research quality hydrophone during your tour.
