Wildlife Wednesday: Meet Alaska’s Seaweed Stewards!

In the 1970s, scientists found that kelp forests with sea otters were healthier than those without. That’s explained by a “trophic cascade”: Otters eat urchins, and urchins eat kelp. When sea otters keep urchin numbers down, kelp flourishes; and when kelp flourishes, it supports an abundant community of algae, fish, invertebrates, and marine mammals.

The salmon comes from a Sitka family-owned and operated troller, the F/V Myra. This freezer boat ensures the highest quality available.

Today we’re celebrating the birthday of our company’s co-founder, Bob Allen! In all our divisions throughout the region, we’re raising a mug in his honor—filled with a strong cup of joe, of course—and coupling it with his all-time favorite treat, a Reese’s!

Meet the women on the water here at Alaskan Dream Cruises! As we kick off the 2024 season, women make up about 50% of the marine department staff aboard our vessels. We sail with great pride knowing this talented group of deckhands, ocean inflatable boat captains, and bridge officers play integral roles in every aspect of maritime operations. Their skill, dedication, and determination chart the course for success, guiding us towards a more inclusive and innovative future at sea.

The Alaskan Dream guests got to experience Little Norway Festival in Petersburg! Petersburg celebrates its Norwegian heritage by honoring Norwegian Constitution Day, May 17th. This is one of the biggest events of the year. The entire community celebrates with food and craft booths throughout downtown, the festival parade, a Scandinavian pageant, Kaffe Hus with Norwegian pastries and goodies made with butter and love, music on the streets, a herring toss, Vikings and Valkyries roaming the streets!

Did you know? Humpback whale songs are long, complex, and only sung by males. Whales within a distinct population sing the same song, while the songs of whales from other populations are different. A typical song lasts from 10-20 minutes and is repeated for hours at a time. These songs change gradually over the years.
