Skamokawa (ska-MOCK-away) is a Wahkia-kum word describing the misty fog that looks like "smoke on the water." One look at this view from our dock, and it's easy to understand the ethereal meaning behind the name.

Here lies the TJ Potter: Our three vacation rentals are named after historical steamboats that carried passengers and freight along the lower Columbia River, often making stops at our building along Steamboat Slough.
Known as one of the fastest and most luxurious steamers in the Pacific Northwest, the TJ Potter was a 230-foot side-wheel paddle steamer built in Portland in 1888. She spent her first year of service on the Portland to Astoria run before moving to the Puget Sound. There, she served the Seattle to Tacoma route, setting a record time of 82 minutes and even assisting in fighting the Great Seattle Fire.
After undergoing a rebuild in 1901, the TJ Potter eventually returned to service for the Portland to Ilwaco run before being condemned for passenger use in 1916. Moored at Youngs Bay in Astoria, she served several years as a barracks boat before being abandoned, burned, and salvaged.
Here is a 2024 photo of her 100-year old ruins in Youngs Bay at low tide. Her timbers below the waterline were protected from the fire.

Say something about this photo…
Looking at this photo from 1972, it’s hard to grasp the painstaking restoration of what was once Silverman’s Emporium. Built over the water on timber pilings in 1910-11, the old steamboat landing stood basically abandoned for nearly four decades. Enter Arnold Andersen, a retired engineer who recognized the stout and stubborn bones made of old-growth Douglas fir timber. His hands and heart poured nearly three decades of meticulous work and detail, bringing this almost-forgotten gem back to life. Now known as Viewpoint Landing, it’s a place where the echoes of the busy wharf, store, and performance theater still linger. https://www.viewpointlanding.com/en/arnold-e-andersen
