Maine's Kennebec Valley is the perfect family-friendly destination for a school break filled with things to do outdoors in the snow. While fun is to be had across the region, Skowhegan has planned a week of winter-themed activities from February 16 to 24, with Somerset SnowFest.
On Friday, the celebration begins with a Kick-off Party at Bigelow Brewing Company featuring their local craft brews and wood-fired pizza.
Saturday is filled with something for young and old at Lake George Regional Park in Canaan. There's a kid's box sled derby, Ice Hole World Championships—which is sort of like co****le but on ice, Kite Festival, Bigelow Brewing Co. beer garden with cozy fire pit, a downhill kayak race, and for more serious competitors, the Winter Bi and Triathlon.
Sunday is more laid back with an ice-fishing derby at the park, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and Winter Carnival with s'mores, winter activities, a craft fair, and more in Skowhegan.
The rest of the week offers up a Yeti Hunt, an afternoon of creating snow art in Coburn Park, a cross-country ski clinic, a snowshoe stroll and story walk on the Wesserunsett Trails, and for the adults — Nine and Wine at Lakewood Golf Course.
Cap off an excitement-filled week on Saturday at the Skowhegan Fairgrounds for the event that started it all, Skijor Skowhegan. Cheer on a horse and rider as they pull a snowboarder or alpine skier down a 1,000-foot track of gates and jumps as you enjoy a local beer, hot drink, or variety of warming local foods.
Plus, the Farmer's Almanac projects the week will see snow flurries, sunshine, and relatively mild temperatures. We think that's pretty close to perfect.
