Secrets of Slinger Tours

Hello history buffs! 102 years ago, my Great Great Grand Uncle John Rosenheimer (first son of Lehman) bought back a 28 acre resort on Cedar Lake where the family had once owned. He created and managed one of the most popular resorts in Wisconsin - Rosenheimer's Resort -that included roller skating, a huge water slide, a swimming beach formed by placing sand on the ice in winter, cabaret shows of the highest caliber employing both local and international talent.

As a trumpet player myself, it is amazing to know that stars such as Louis Armstrong, Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey, the INFAMOUS Gyspy Rose Lee with all her "scarves", Fred MacMurray, etc. would take a train to Schleisingerville and then coach or train to the Cedar Lake Station to entertain Cedar Lake residents and non residents alike.

In 1920, the entrepreneurial drive of the Rosenheimers continued. John built a large octagonal shaped dance hall that had a capacity of 1400 guests. The dance hall was packed every weekend. My grandmother Margery used to recall the delicious Sunday Chicken dinners, Red Flannel Hash and Franconia potatoes dishes dabbled with beet relish that even children raved about!

The resort property was sold to the Cedar Lake Yacht Club in 1957.

When your children complain about hot school lunches show the this photo of Wisconsin children (Happy Wisconsin Children!) eating a hot school lunch 100 years ago! If you were lucky you could get an additional stewed prune:)

Below photo is an advertisement placed by my 3rd Great Uncle John Rosenheimer in the local newspaper of Slinger (Schleisingerville) "Das Botschafter" 4th of July 1900. The translation was difficult form German dialect to English, but wow, what marketing promises! He was, however, one of the best cream city brick producers in the State according to sales records.

“John Rosenheimer: Schleisingerville, WI Farm Machinery, excellent horses (for work or transport) borrowable deliveries. Gravel, split stone Kalf cream brick and cement. Best in the State!”

The second photo is an advertisement for Storck Beer in the same newspaper, Das Botschafter 4th of July 1900, Chas Storck Brewery: “This Brewery delivers the best beer in the entire free world whether from the tap or in bottles. The largest array of the best brewery supplies in the world. Your orders will be fulfilled every time!” Whoooeee, it makes "Budweiser, the King of Beers" seem like a modest claim! I hope you enjoyed a trip back to 1900:)
