The 36th Annual Bastrop County Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission Walk for Peace, Justice, and Equality will be held on January 20th in Bastrop, TX!

The theme continues to be โ€œRemember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On...Not a Day Off!!โ€

The annual walk rotates between the cities of Bastrop, Elgin and Smithville. This year, the walk starts at the Paul Quinn African Methodist Episcopal Church, 1108 Walnut Street at 10 am and will end at the Bastrop Convention Center, 1408 Chestnut Street where a tribute celebration will be held.

Dock Jackson, the founder and coordinator of the event stressed that โ€œIt is important that we continue to educate our youth and future generations about the civil rights struggle that Dr. King and others led. He gave the ultimate sacrifice to pave the way for the freedoms so many of us enjoy today. It is only fitting that a hero such as King be honored. The annual walk is our way in Bastrop County of helping educate our youth who are our future.โ€

Keep Smithville Beautiful (KSB) is a volunteer organization that was founded in 1985 by the Smithville Garden Club, and it joined Keep Texas Beautiful in 1988. Since its inception until present day, many dedicated volunteers and leaders have had multiple successful ventures and projects that have taken place to beautify our community. Keep Smithville Beautiful has been a beacon of environmental stewardship and of community pride. Some of the partners who have helped KSB carry out the various projects include the Smithville Area Chamber or Commerce, the City of Smithville, the Smithville Garden Club, the Lower Colorado River Authority, the Union Pacific Foundation, Graduate Students of Dr. Nancy Volkmann in the College of Landscape Design at Texas A&M, for developing the Master Plan for Main Street, to the merchants and generous individuals for underwriting the Lamp Posts on Main Street to help return a bit of ambiance of Early Smithville, Keep Texas Beautiful and certainly the citizens who benefit from these assets. We collectively express our sincere thanks and appreciation to each one over the past decades for their dedication, perseverance and support in the development and implementation of the projects either financially, with guidance and direction, labor assistance, supplies, and/or maintenance. It truly does take a village to make all of these things come to fruition.
