My husband works in health care and sometimes those fancy safety outfits come in handy. He fully dressed up to go down into the crawl space to put in the plumbing for our kitchen island. Now that we have a full tourist season under our belt, I'm really looking back at how far we've come on our cabin and making my list of off season projects that still need to be completed.

One year ago today I finished the last of the vinyl flooring. The new landing at the top of the stairs was a major hurdle for us to figure out. Previously you had to step over the support beam onto a narrow step and it was awkward and precarious. Now the top of the stairs opens onto a large step that almost feels like a natural transition. Our (now 6 year old) daughter, who happens to be in both pictures, was there for almost every part of our remodel. While not always helpful, she kept me entertained. The before picture was taken when we took the kids to see the house we were buying. They all seemed a little unsure, but now I think it's everyone's happy place.

Our current guests are celebrating their 35th anniversary with their first trip to Alaska, so I wanted to make it a memorable one with a souvenir blanket.

Our peonies bloomed for the first time this year. The previous owner told us where they were planted, but that they hadn't bloomed for her and admitted it was because they hadn't received the care they needed. This year they were babied and we got our first blooms. They were so big and vibrant and beautiful and we had a second round of blooms coming until... the moose ate the buds. I was so sad!

We have been nearly 100% booked for the last two and a half months. What an amazing first summer!

Today's guest is coming from another city in Alaska, so my typical Alaskan welcome basket wasn't going to cut it. These guests get cinnamon rolls with hazelnut buttercream frosting as well as hazelnut creamer left for them in the fridge.

With the season slowing down, I finally have time to work on my list of cabin crafts!

I really enjoy coming up with something special to leave on a case by case basis for guests. These guests thanked me for the Swedish Fish because they were the only fish caught on their trip!

This sandhill crane was limping around pretending to be hurt so we wouldn't pay any attention to the babies.

Our lawn is still a work in progress. It needs to not rain for a day so we can try to fertilize and get rid of weeds! The lawn was fairly neglected for several years before we purchased the cabin, so it will take a few more to get it in the shape I would like it to be in eventually. The raspberries are coming in nicely!

Sometimes when you're 15 and stronger than you know, you get to learn to replace the window you accidentally broke. The cabin has a few old wood windows in it that we knew would need to be replaced to help with winter heat conservation, but this replacement has to happen faster than our plans!

We lost a lot of limbs on trees with our heavy snow fall this winter. Today I made my burn barrel look like a burning tree with hours worth of burning limbs.

It's been a month now since I've been at the cabin and how things have changed! This was frozen sold with 5 feet of snow last I was here. Almost all of the snow is gone and the yard is starting to green up nicely! Soon the wood frogs will be croaking on the pond.

Our current guests arrived late at night and needed to be at work early the following morning. They're staying a month and I wanted to provide all things Alaska so they'd have some breakfast and snacks for work. The jam is black currant habaneo made from our own currants and locally grown habanero.

The live edge island is my favorite part of the kitchen. When we bought the cabin, the island faced the opposite direction, which made the kitchen feel very closed off and less functional. The fridge was in front of the window and I'm never one to waste some good, natural lighting! The ceiling is low and it's shocking how much the open shelving made the room look larger. In the interest in saving as much height as possible, we poured a concrete floor instead of using space for all of the layers that tile involves.
