Today is the last day of our 2024 operating season! We are open today from 1-4 PM, so feel free to stop by if you're nearby! Here is a general overview of this year's activity (note that the information is based on up to September 11).

Thank you to everyone that has visited us this season, and we hope to see an even more successful and productive year in 2025!

The final for our 2024 season has been identified as a WWII Red Cross ditty bag apron! Apparently this can be worn like an apron and may have been used to contain one's personal supplies, such as toiletries.

Reminder that tomorrow (Saturday, September 13 at 10 AM) is our historical society's annual Fall Fling event! It is being hosted at the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, so please come visit us! Also tomorrow is the final day that our museum will be open until May of next year, and for tomorrow only our operating hours are 1-4 PM.

If you come by to the museum, you'll be able to check out our new WW2 Army uniform display!

For our final , the museum would once again like your help in identifying what this particular item is! A WWII military uniform was recently donated to us (and now it is on display, so please come visit to see our new display before we close this Saturday!), but we're unsure what some items are. One such item is this bag that came with the rest of the uniform.

Please let us know if you recognize what this is, thank you!

We are saddened to learn about the passing of Mr. Lowell. Our condolences go out to his family.

Our beloved Norman Lowell passed away on Monday night. He was 96 years old. His journey of life is now complete, but may his paintings, writings, and the kindness and generosity for which he was so well known continue to inspire countless people across the world.
From Norman's many poetic writings is this piece, written about his own artistic expressions, titled 'Remember':

Remember...
These are but the efforts of a man. If you are impressed, look to the grandeur of this great land; and it may overwhelm your greatest imagination, cause you to wonder, to reflect upon all you have ever seen or known upon this earth. May it make you know with certainty that it was God who formed this earth, and his hand that touched with beauty this place.

Let me lead your mind one step further beyond the veil of this earth and tell you of another place, a home not made with human hands, whose builder and maker is God.

This is the word of God to man: "that this land and this place called heaven far exceeds the glories of this earth!"
- Norman Lowell

We love and miss you, Norman.

Soldotna’s Gem

The Homestead Museum consists of a historic log village. Among the log structures is the last territorial school built in 1958, where students studied by the light of gas lanterns, still hanging in the school. Damon Hall, a large building constructed for the Alaska Centennial, features an outstanding display of wildlife mounts with a background mural of these species' natural habitat. A collection of homestead artifacts and photos can be found in the former Soldotna Chamber of Commerce log tourist center. Growing around the Museum's grounds are a variety of local flowers and berries. Groomed paths can also take visitors to Centennial Campground and the Soldotna Visitor Center fish walks for views of the world famous, Kenai River!
