Black Miami Matters 309 years of Spanish Flrorida and being the gateway to Latin America make Florida and Miami's black history the most unique in the USA.

Spanish Florida invited escaped British and American slaves to freedom in Florida, requiring Africans to convert to Catholicism and defend against British and American invasions. Florida's first years were dominated by the Seminole Wars, really the Black Seminoles, whereby Africans and Native Americans joined forces to combat being sent to Oklahoma or back to the plantation for Africans. ack Seminoles make up a large part of this page. Lastly is Miami's little known contribution to civil rights in the 1950s and 60s. Miami's foreign born black population is larger than the American born black population, adding to its unique flavor.
