Michigan East Coast with
Thunder Bay Resort
September 11 – 14, 2022
Day 1: We travel to Bay City’s favorite restaurant authentic restaurant serving all homemade Polish favorites on their American and Polish buffet at Krzysiak’s House. Continuing north, we travel to the lakeside town of East Tawas where we will visit the Tawas Point Lighthouse built in 1876. Back in East Tawas we check into Tawas Bay Beach Resort located on the sandy shores of Tawas Bay. “Fin in the Sun” on a private beach wading or swimming in Tawas Bay or take a walk on the adjacent Tawas State Dock, which extends a quarter mile out into the bay. Or enjoy a stroll down Newman Street with its quaint shops and sidewalk cafes. When we stayed here a couple of years ago, we had a hard time getting the people onto the bus because they were enjoying the relaxation and the atmosphere so much. We will enjoy dinner at Northwood’s Steak House, where the atmosphere is “up North” and creates an intimate ambiance with a warm and cozy feeling.
Day 2: Enjoy a hot breakfast at the hotel before departing along the shoreline to visit the Sturgeon Point Lighthouse which was completed in 1870 and is now regarded as a historic example of a Cape Cod style Great Lakes Lighthouse. Next we make our way to Alpena, MI, crossing into the 45th parallel,, putting you halfway between the equator and the North Pole. Arriving in the quaint downtown area, you have time on your own. Additional time is allowed for visiting the ice cream parlor, try a little wine tastings, or visit one of the galleries, shops, and boutiques. Our next stop is the Besser Museum for Northeast Museum, the only accredited museum in the region with changing exhibit and galleries. Our final destination is Thunder Bay where we will stay for the next 2 nights. Enjoy relaxing on the ground of the resort overlooking the grounds, play a game of horseshoes with our friends, or time in the hot tub. This evening we enjoy a plated dinner in the clubhouse, finishing your evening with under the stars and around a bonfire complete with S’mores.
Day 3: This morning, enjoy a full hot breakfast at the Resort Clubhouse Grill before departing back to Alpena and the Great Lake Maritime Heritage Center, this 20,000 sq. ft. center was built by the NOAA administration to compliment the Thunder Bay National Underwater Ship Wreck Preserve. Lake Huron’s unpredictable weather, its foggy banks, and sudden gales couples with the rocky shoals earned Thunder Bay the unfortunate name of “Shipwreck Alley”. During the 200 year history, score of vessels ended their careers on the lake floor of Alpena, Michigan. After touring the Maritime Heritage Center, we board the “Lady Michigan” to explore the actual shipwrecks located in the Thunder Bay Sanctuary. As we cruise the shoreline, the “glass bottom” will be provided upon returning and space reserved inside the maritime facility for lunch. This afternoon, we will visit one of the oldest surviving lighthouses on the Great Lakes. We pick up our guide that will tell us more about the Old Presque Isle Lighthouse which was built in 1840. Then it’s on to the New Presque Isle Lighthouse built in 1871. We arrive back at Thunder Bay Resort to relax a little before our evening event. Be prepared for a four-hour slice of Northern Michigan heaven. Enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride through the woods, across Thunder Bay, and into the Elk Preserve. You will see majestic Rocky Mountain Elk and trophy whitetails. Then it’s on to the Elk Antler Log Cabin for a gourmet five-course dinner prepared before you on antique wood cook stoves. You will also enjoy samples of six locally produced wines from the “Sunrise Side”.
Day 4: After a full breakfast at he the Clubhouse Grill we depart toward home traveling Oscoda County, Michigan’s largest Amish and Mennonite country. Our first stop will be at The Pioneer General Store, known by the locals as “The Amish Mall”. Walking into the store is literally like stepping into another century, to a kinder, gentler America. Pick up a sample of the renowned Amish baked goods and stop at he the Bulk Food Store. As we continue our tour, we will stop for lunch at the Quality Inn Forward Conference Center . which is home to Lumber Jack Food & Spirits. Enjoy a little time to shop the gift shop before lunch on our own, enjoying specialties such as White wine Pucker Pickles, Buckeye Onion Soup. And Gang-sawed BBQ ribs. We will make a quick stop at Williams Cheese Company – Factory Outlet for good old-fashion Pimconning Cheese. You’ll be delighted when you try Grandma’s Chunky Cheese Bread, or when you experience any of their original home-made cheese spreads. , their nationally-acclaimed Double-Bleu Cheese Dressing, or Cheddar & Green Olive cheese. Then it’s time to head home after a great experience on the Sunrise Side of Michigan.
