Call to Action: Monday, 3/3/2025 - the City of South Haven will introduce new regulations on Short-term Rentals and their Homeowners, that will have devastating effects on not just their income, but on the income of the local businesses in downtown South Haven, and many of the local contractors as well; from the electricians and plumbers to laundry and landscaping services.
The City's own economic study states
✔ STRs generate $12M+ in annual income for South Haven residents.
✔ Visitors staying in STRs spend between $25M - $35M in local businesses every year.
✔ STRs directly support over 500 jobs—many of which will disappear if these restrictions take effect.
💡 Meanwhile, the city has proposed NO plan to replace this lost income, employment, or economic activity.
This Ordinance is Based on Flawed Justifications.
The city claims STRs cause parking issues, but its own report states there is no clear link.
The city claims STR occupancy reductions will help housing affordability, but this will only force more homes into the hands of investors and second-home buyers.
The city continues to treat STRs as the cause of every problem in South Haven while failing to present real solutions for year-round housing, economic stability, or community growth.
At a time of economic uncertainty in America, with our high inflation rates, gas prices, cost of food, Tourism will already be deeply impacted - can we really afford to cripple our local businesses? Our Neighbors? Our Community?
We understand that STRs are a highly emotional issue here in South Haven for several residents - and we do believe that STRs should not be lawless. We say ENFORCE the codes that are already there as we try and find a balanced way that is based on facts and not emotion. Enforcement is key here.
Now is not the time to cripple our local economy.
If the City Council believes this WILL NOT harm the economy - prove it? Call for an Economic Study on these regulations before they are enacted.
What can you do? What are we asking you to do?
We are asking you to tell the City Council that the new STR Regulations should not move forward and should be immediately scrapped until fair and balanced solutions can be created. This involves having leaders from the Community, Short-term Rentals, Local Businesses finding solutions together.
Call the City Council. Email them. Better yet, show up and voice your opinion Monday night!
