According to a 2018 Ipsos survey of 20,096 adults—the most comprehensive U.S.-based study on the topic of loneliness—young adults between the ages of 18-25 are the loneliest segment, by age, of the U.S. population with over 46% reporting that loneliness as a significant issue they face.

Loneliness can come in different forms such as feeling a lack of emotional connection to others, feeling socially isolated, and feeling alone while in a room full of people.

If you’re struggling with loneliness, here are 5 things that have helped my clients battle lonliness and feel a greater sense of belonging (some of them may seem a bit counterintuitive):

- Take a social media break

- Get outside

- Discover a hobby and invite a friend to participate with you

- Help someone

- Take care of your physical health

We are hardwired for connection.

The tradition is that lovers can lock a padlock on a bridge and then throw the key into the river, symbolically locking their love forever is romantic but my experience after 33 years of marriage and 25 years working with clients tells me it takes a little more than that to truly find the connection and belonging we are all longing for.

“Belonging is the innate human desire to be part of something larger than us. Because this yearning is so primal, we often try to acquire it by fitting in and by seeking approval, which are not only hollow substitutes for belonging, but often barriers to it. Because true belonging only happens when we present our authentic, imperfect selves to the world.” -Brené Brown

Connection is the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued.

So how do we create that connection with those we love? I like the acronym ATTUNE

- Attend – make sure you are finding intents to be totally mentally present. This means putting away your phone and other devices

- Turn Towards – body language matters, physically turn towards each other, make eye contact, match posture and level

- Understand – ask questions, show interest, learn more about them, “what is it like to be you?”

- Nondefensively listen – this is harder than it sounds, don’t interrupt, don’t listen to formulate your reply, just listen

- Empathize – this means staying out of judgment, recognizing and verbalizing emotions (theirs and yours), don’t try to “fix it”. Empathy is connecting with people so they know they are not alone in their struggle

What's the most important message for teenagers to hear in today's world? (answers in images from teens in recovery)

Our students are from all over the country, and come from a myriad of different backgrounds, families, social/economic situations, etc. However, the one thing that seems to knit them together, is the trauma they have faced (whether it be abuse, loss, abandonment, issues related to gender identity, or mental health related issues that present challenges socially, emotionally, or mentally).

Working with them is a privilege and we see incredible growth every day. They learn quickly how to have self-acceptance, exercise authenticity, repair relationships that have been broken, and how to be resilient despite the difficulties they face. They teach us so much!

My favorite message from today - “You are enough”

One of the things that sets Stillwater apart from other therapeutic boarding schools is our housing program. Instead of our clients having rooms or dorms that they stay in on campus, they go home in groups of three to one of our housing parent's homes, who are vetted and certified with the state of Utah. This not only allows our students to decompress and get away, but they are able to go "home" to a warm and loving environment everyday. They eat dinner with these families and participate in any family activities that may be going on. Here is a video of one of our previous clients sharing about how the homes at Stillwater helped her on her healing journey!

Change is not linear! It is easy to feel like we are stuck in the same unhealthy cycles, but often if we can take a step back and look at the bigger picture, we will see growth and improvement. Take time regularly to give yourself credit!
