Is it a snake? 🐍
Noooooo!
🦎 Its a Mimic Glass Lizard! 🦎These tan/brown reptiles with speckled pale and dark markings measure 15 to almost 26 inches can be found in the southeastern Coastal Plain, they love pine flatwoods and open woodlands. Despite looking like snakes, they've got movable eyelids and ears!

Fun fact:
When threatened, they literally drop their tails! The tail will continue to move on its own distracting predators while the lizard escapes. And don't worry, their tail actually Grows Back!

The Butterfly Highway at the Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center is filling in and has shown off a bit this summer! We are looking forward to next year as it becomes more established and really takes off. The NCWF Wildlife Habitat Stewards of NE NC have been amazing to work with on this project!

🏄‍♂️🌊It's Surfing has been around for centuries, with roots in Polynesia, particularly Hawaii and Tahiti. Surfing was introduced to the northern coast of North Carolina in the 1920s.

Please see the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers's news story regarding the Deep Creek Bridge. The bridge will be closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic on Sunday, Aug. 18th from 8am-6pm for maintenance.

The Dismal Swamp Canal is OPEN!
*Bridge will operate as normal for maritime traffic- vessels should exercise caution when passing the bridge.

- Upcoming Deep Creek Bridge Closure for Maintenance -

The Corps will close the Deep Creek Bridge on Sunday, August 18th, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for maintenance.

Though both sites are located in very close proximity to one another, routine maintenance and repair of the existing 90-year old bridge is unrelated to the construction of the new bridge under the Deep Creek Bridge Restoration Project.

Continued maintenance current structure will help ensure that commuters continue to be able to transit the old bridge safely until the first span of the new bridge is complete and open to the public.
