Long before he founded Chow Town Food Tours, Max was a kid growing up in north Jersey. Back then, meals were served at eye level. He couldn't quite reach the good stuff. Today, he can reach anything on the table, and it shows! Max is a foodie who can't wait to share the best of his home turf -- suburban New Jersey -- with you, the newest citizens of Chow Town. Let's grab some chow!

And now for our new series, favorite foods of famous New Jerseyans...

1 - Late great Cuban-American celebrity chef Carl Ruiz, who, after extensive research, proclaimed the best cuban sandwich in the country to be found at La Pola in West New York

2 - James Racioppi, aka Jimmy Buff, who popularized the epic NJ Italian hot dog (get one now from their West Orange or Kenilworth locations)

3 - Our 22nd & 24th president, Grover Cleveland, from Caldwell, NJ was said to favor corned beef and cabbage (probably because taylor ham hadn't been invented yet)

4 - Legendary poet, Merlin lookalike, and longtime Camden resident Walt Whitman, who wrote Leaves of Grass and preferred coffee cake

We love local history. This is Gruning’s ice cream, THE SPOT to be in from the 1930’s-50’s. 15 flavors of ice cream, a jukebox, and a Coke cost a nickel.

We happen to know exactly where Gruning’s was located. Do you? Comment with your memories of this neighborhood institution.

Montclair Brewery is a special place. They brew amazing beer on site while supporting the whole community. Check out their schedule of events and guest food trucks. Lately our fav brew is their lager made with Japanese rice! Light, summery, and distinct as heck.
