Great things are happening in The Burg! Come visit and take some classes while you are staying with us.
Southeast Tennessee Development (setd) Awards
Arts in the Burg for Innovation
On Friday October 21st, South Pittsburg Mayor, Samantha Rector and, City Manager, Gene Vess, were invited to a Southeast Tennessee Development District award luncheon. During the award ceremony there were twenty-one awards given of which, South Pittsburg received one. As the recipient of the setd Innovation Award, Arts in the Burg, a South Pittsburg Area Revitalization Quest (SPARQ) program, was recognized for its innovative approach to creative placemaking.
Arts in the Burg provides working studio space, open to the public, that nurtures artists, promotes creative placemaking, as well as programming and entertainment to develop a unique travel destination in South Pittsburg, TN.
Dale Woodfin, Founder and Director of Arts in the Burg, was recognized by Mayor Rector during the November 15th, South Pittsburg City Council Meeting for his contributions to the development of Arts in the Burg.
Upon receiving the award Dale expressed his gratitude saying, “It’s a community effort that has produced 53 events in the first year on front street (207 Cedar Ave.) that were not there the previous year. Everyone of you who have been there are a part of the success. If you haven’t come for a visit, come take a look at the art in the gallery, take a class or spend some time with the artists soon. Marcus Banks, one of our resident artist, is with us tonight. These 5 artists make it possible, SPARQ makes it possible… Tennessee Arts Commission has come through with big grants for us. Right now, we are replacing all the windows; made possible by the Arts Commission so, it’s a community beautification effort as well. Thrive Partnerships, setd (Southeastern Development) and the Lyndhurst Foundation have all been a huge help. Thanks to everybody. It’s a community effort!”
