Took a day-trip to Winston Salem and Bethabara yesterday. Everyone has heard of Old Salem, but Bethabara came first. Just a little bit further north, it was the first Moravian settlement in the Carolinas. A few original buildings still stand, although most of the village is now just foundations. The Visitor's Center was a great starting point, and the tour guide showed us around the main structures with lots of information about the settlement. I would love to come back and see the recreated gardens in the height of spring and summer! Well worth the visit!

A month ago, my daughter and I took our second trip to Scotland together. This time, it was to celebrate my 45th birthday! It was a whirlwind trip with lots of planes, trains, and automobiles, but we relished every minute. Our base of operations was split between Edinburgh for the first half and Inverness for the second. We spent Thanksgiving Day on a bus trip to see the Kelpies and Stirling Castle. And the food was amazing as always (as evidenced by our favorite breakfast plate)! We couldn't leave Edinburgh without (partially) climbing Arthur's Seat and touring the Palace of Holyrood (even if I was a bit muddy from sliding down the mountain some at the end). In Inverness, we enjoyed walking along the banks of the River Ness and around town. Finally, we spent a full day traveling to Urquehart Castle on Loch Ness, Eilean Donan Castle, and touring the Isle of Skye's beautiful natural landmarks. We experienced every kind of weather that day, including hail while unsuccessfully trying to take a selfie in front of Kilt Rock. And it was all worth it. If you haven't already, go visit Scotland rain or shine! The history, people, and landscapes will draw you in and never let go!

While my daughter enjoyed a day camp at Henricus National Park this week, I explored historical Virginia to my nerdy heart's content. I spent the first day in downtown Richmond. Parked at the site of Libby Prison and walked across the street to the Virginia Holocaust Museum for the morning. Harrowing exhibits, but very well done. After lunch, I toured the nearby Poe Museum in the oldest house in Richmond. Day 2 I drove over to Yorktown to dig into my ancestors, the Digges family. I had the pleasure of having lunch in the 1720 Cole Digges House, my 8th great-grandmother's nephew. His father's house was just down the street. The whole family is buried out at the old Bellfield Plantation outside town. Finally, on day 3, while the kids were out kayaking, I got to wander through Henricus itself. This 1611 settlement deserves just as much credit as Jamestown. Go check it out! (Plus, we got to visit with some sweet deer at our Airbnb.)

Took advantage of the long weekend for a trip up to Pilot Mountain! We started our first full day by checking off another ( #18 of 27 for us) at Horne Creek Farm and got to know some of the animals and people working there. We spent that evening in Mt. Airy for dinner and a ghost tour of the town. Very informative day! The second day we went to the top of Pilot Mountain to check out the views and later wandered over to see the ruins of the Rock House (a formerly 4-story stacked rock home built between 1770 and 1785 by a Revolutionary Patriot). It was a simple weekend, but full of fun. Go check out your world!

Just returned home from a day trip to Durham to celebrate the 159th anniversary of the largest surrender of the American Civil War at Bennett Place. Some fascinating and well-documented history here. I'm so glad we went, especially since there was a good bit mentioned about the battle of Monroe's Crossroads nearby to us and its impact on the negotiations at Bennett Place. Lots of connections made with our history! Go out and explore your world!

We three history nerds spent our Spring break at the Historic Triangle of Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg, and Yorktown. We enjoyed the Haunted Williamsburg tour, visited with some of the farm animals, got surprisingly entranced by the upholstery exhibit at the Art Museum, and came face to face (sometimes literally) with ancestors at Jamestown and Yorktown. All in all, we saw 5 different museums and countless historic sites and structures. I think my favorite was the Jamestown Rediscovery site with all of the archaeology! Go out and explore your world and put history into context with your life!

Our Story

Growing up in Southern Pines A Step In Time's founder, Carley Sutton, was constantly surrounded by the beauty of this young and unique town. But, it is easy to take your hometown for granted when you're young, so she only knew a very basic history about the area. However, it may have influenced her decision to study Architecture in college and she has had a passion for history throughout her life. Returning to Southern Pines after a change of careers and a drive to be closer to her family, Carley quickly became involved in her community. What started as a desire to protect some historical homes in her neighborhood led Carley deep into research about the history of her hometown. And she discovered so many wonderful stories that needed to be shared. Having a passion also for costuming due to many years in the theater arts, Carley quickly decided that a tour guide dressed like the early town residents would be yet another history lesson. So, she created a costume and put together her months of research into a fun and informative tour through her lovely town. She looks forward to sharing her knowledge with you!
