Paradise in the Pines Episode 72: Joe Grant, Starworks
If you’re familiar with our annual Pinecone Pathways Program, you know just how excited people get about finding one of these shiny glass treasures! Each glass pinecone is handcrafted by the talented glassmakers at Starworks in Star, NC, right next door in Montgomery County.
Leading the glass studio at Starworks is Joe Grant, who moved to the area from Illinois nearly 20 years ago. Three years ago, the CVB partnered with Joe to create these beautiful glass pinecones, sparking not just a regional collaboration but a viral sensation. Now, every year, dedicated “coneheads” travel from as many as six states to explore select Moore County trails, hoping to find a pinecone to cherish forever.
In this episode of Paradise in the Pines, Grant shares the story behind Starworks, their international artist residency program, exciting annual events, and, of course, the joy of crafting the glass pinecones that so many love to hunt for in Moore County.
