With resurfacing kicking off on Highway 290 – one of our county’s most-traveled roads – work is moving in some form or fashion on all 577 projects that will be funded by the Capital Penny Sales Tax approved by voters in November.
“While the public may not see it physically right now, it’s in design, it’s in right of way acquisition, we are working and seeing movement on every single penny project.”

Multiple construction projects are underway on one busy highway in Duncan, meant to simplify things for drivers in that area.

Yesterday we hosted Treasure Game$ to award its third prize after the Cheshire family found a genie lamp hidden along the River Birch Trail. Treasure Games, a national scavenger hunt of sorts, features thousands of people nationwide solving clues to find hidden treasures that can be worth up to $1M, or in the Cheshire’s case: three wishes. Keurig Dr Pepper announced it would further its growth in today thanks to a $141M investment set to create 84 new jobs. The expansion will host production of Keurig’s next-generation K-Rounds – plastic-free coffee pods created from premium coffee beans that are ground, pressed, and wrapped in a protective, plant-based coating.

Spartanburg County is making its mark in the cycling and soft mobility spaces, helping to diversify our county’s economic investment ecosystem. TIME Bicycles, located along what will be the Saluda Grade Rail Trail, furthered their goals this year when Greenville-based Boyd Cycling partnered with Cardinal Cycling Group to acquire Munich Composites, an advanced carbon-rim manufacturer based in Germany.

The Upstate is quickly becoming a bicycle manufacturing hub with Landrum leading the charge with TIME Bicycles, Boyd Cycling and others.

ARKU, Inc., a sheet metal leveling and deburring manufacturer, announced today it will bring a multi-million dollar investment to Spartanburg County, creating 10 jobs at its facility. We're excited to welcome ARKU to Spartanburg, and grateful for yet another company with an international presence bringing operations to our area.

Last year, Spartanburg County voters approved a Capital Penny Sales Tax with proceeds (estimated to be around $478 million) going to 577 critical road and infrastructure projects countywide. We vowed the penny would allow our community to leverage state and federal dollars to improve our roads. Now that Spartanburg County has been awarded $16 million in federal money for road safety, that has come to fruition.

Spartanburg County has been awarded $16 million in U.S. Department of Transportation funding to implement safety enhancements along Asheville Highway and North Pine Street.

Today, we joined our community partners at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System for an official signing with Re: Degree Spartanburg. SRHS is committed to advancing the education of staff in the areas of Imaging Services and Laboratory, each of which need staff with additional certifications and bachelor’s or master’s degrees to advance in leadership positions. We’re incredibly happy to have buy-in from Spartanburg Regional and excited to work with their first cohort!

Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport set passenger-count records in May and June after adding a host of new destinations and beginning construction on several major updates to the airport and its surrounding infrastructure. May saw 266,823 passengers, and June saw 265,819. This continues a strong streak of activity for GSP, which is a significant economic and tourism development driver across our region.

Passenger activity at the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport reached an all-time high in May, keeping with predictions made by airport leadership.

Today we celebrated the very first graduate who has earned their degree thanks to Re: Degree Spartanburg. Kimberly Anderson, a Special-Ed. Aide at Jesse Boyd Elementary, is now a Converse University graduate. Today wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the Spartanburg Academic Movement and the partnership of both Converse and Spartanburg School District 7. We hope Kimberly’s story will be a beacon of hope for the thousands across our county with some college but no degree to take that first step and engage with Re:Degree. Congratulations, Kimberly! 🎓👏

to the news that PAL: Play Advocate Live Well, the City of Spartanburg, SC, and the National Trail Service had opened up public access to Duncan Park Lake for the first time since the 1950s. The lake, complete with ADA-compliant launch dock, is open for fishing and kayaking.
“We certainly want this to be a win for everyone, including the neighborhood, so we’ll all learn and grow together.”

PAL Executive Director Laura Ringo said the lake will officially open for boating and fishing August 1.

In case you missed the news, Carbotech Group announced it would invest $3.4M in Spartanburg County - its first S.C. facility - creating 35 new jobs. Carbotech is a great addition to our county's robust manufacturing sector, and Spartanburg has proven over the years that companies investing here find success here.

The $3.4 million investment involves the purchase of a 14,000-square-foot space.

Several members of our team were proud to represent Spartanburg County at the annual Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives conference, held this year in Dallas. While picking up some useful insights from organizations across the country, our team was also fortunate enough to travel to neighboring Fort Worth, and a few of us even went to the MLB All-Star Game hosted by the Texas Rangers, the Major League affiliate of the Hub City Spartanburgers!

The Saluda Grade Rail Trail – which has already proven to be an economic driver to our area – was recently awarded a $450K federal grant by The Appalachian Regional Initiative for Stronger Economies. Since its initial announcement, the Saluda Grade Rail Trail has been key in recruiting TIME Bicycles to build the U.S.’ largest carbon fiber bike manufacturing facility, and Boyd Cycling’s decision to locate Munich Composites’ North American production facility in Spartanburg County.

Our community partners at PAL: Play Advocate Live Well have kickstarted an innovative Food Hub, selling local produce to individuals through an online store; a “farmers market meets Instacart,” approach. Anyone looking to utilize PAL’s Food Hub can make an account on their website, and during an order window of Thurs.-Sun., place orders for in-season produce and more before picking it up at PAL’s office the next Thursday.

Spartanburg farmers are selling seasonal local produce online through the PAL food hub website, including tomatoes, cucumbers, peaches, blackberries and watermelon.

2023 Elaine Harris Tourism Champion Award: Spartanburg County Parks

Jon Woodsby was friends with the late Mayor of Pacolet Elaine Harris. Jon was involved in the effort, spearheaded by Mayor Harris, to create a roadmap for the future of tourism development countywide. Jon, inspired by his friendship with Mayor Harris, has been a key player in an overall tourism development strategy, taking advantage of our sports facilities and natural amenities to bring people here. For his dedication to the vision of Elaine Harris, we are proud to recognize the Spartanburg County Parks Department as our 2023 Tourism Champion.

2023 Economic Champion: the City of Woodruff

Woodruff is home to a swath of locally-driven investment, including several new businesses in the heart of downtown. Additionally, the City of Woodruff, South Carolina will be home to BMW Plant Woodruff, a $700-million facility where the German automaker will assemble electric vehicle batteries before sending them up the road to BMW Plant Spartanburg and putting them in EVs fresh off the manufacturing line. For a long list of accomplishments, and even more to come, we are proud to name the City of Woodruff our 2023 Economic Champion.
