The 13 Yule Lads ("Jólasveinar") – creatures from festive Nordic folklore Starting on 12 December, they descend one by one from the mountains. According to legend, the Yule Lads are the sons of the troll witch Grýla.
Unlike most other countries that only have one Santa Claus, Iceland has thirteen!!! They are called Jólasveinar (Yule lads or Christmas boys) and take turns visiting children the 13 nights leading up to Christmas Eve.
Children place one of their shoes on the windowsill of their rooms on each of those nights. For those children that behave well during that day the Yule lads will leave candy or a small treat but for those who behave badly can expect a rotten potato.
December 12 – Stekkjastaur (Sheep-Cote-Clod) is the first Yule Lad who comes to town on the night before the 12th of December and also the first to depart for home on the 25th December. Sheep-Cote-Clod was said to harass sheep, suck milk from them and was known for having two stiff peg-legs.

It all dates back to the Victorians who started a society called the Thirteen Club, which held its first meeting on Sept. 13, 1881. Guests walked under crossed ladders to a 13 seat table festooned with spilled salt. It was a notable party and repudiation of superstition, but The Victorians can't take all the credit for Friday the 13th.
The idea that 13 was an unlucky number may go back to ancient mythology. According to Folklore a Norse myth told of a dinner party for 12 gods at which a 13th guest showed up uninvited. The gatecrasher..the trickster god Loki who shot the god of joy and happiness, Balder. The Christian tale of the Last Supper likewise holds Judas, Jesus' betrayer, as the "unlucky" 13th guest.
It’s a known fact that paranormal evens are at an all time high on this date too so what better time to join us !

GRYLA THE CHRISTMAS WITCH
While Krampus may be king of holiday scares, his fans may be overlooking an equally nasty, much more formidable queen , a Christmas monster who lives further north, in the frigid climes of Iceland who goes by the name Grýla, the Christmas witch. This tough ogress lives in a cave in Iceland’s hinterlands, the matriarch of a family of strange creatures, launching attacks on nearby townships, snatching up misbehaving children, and turning them into delicious stew.
Grýla, whose name translates loosely to “growler,” would be among these, showing up with a horned tail and a bag into which she would toss naughty children!
