Gregg Allman

Gregg Allman

Back in 1989, The Neville Brothers invited southern rock gentleman Gregg Allman, blues slide-guitar virtuoso Bonnie Raitt, and jazz-pianist Herbie Hancock to perform in a Cinemax Sessions music special. All pioneers of their own kind playing staple songs from each other’s catalogues, the Allman Brothers‘ classic “Midnight Rider” stood out as something truly special.

I know I get really excited about posting and sharing great experiences with y’all, as I’m always grateful for all these opportunities.

But this one?
This is a big one for me.

This is beyond my wildest dreams, in so many ways.

If you had told my younger teenage self that I’d be Performing one of most iconic songs in the history of Rock and Roll, Bohemian Rhapsody AND attempting to replace all the vocals including the vocal opera with an ALL GUITAR version AND with 3 out of 5 guitarists being my true guitar heroes that changed my life, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen AND the 3rd being Brian May himself, who recorded and performed this historic song and passionate guitar solo with his Legendary band Queen. AND THEN throw in one of my generations ripping guitar peers, Zakk Wylde, and top it off with this generations innovative guitar wizardry of Tosin Abasi...

The young ME would’ve said... get out of my fu***ng room and shut the door so I can get back to studying the entire Queen catalog, Vai’s Passion and Warfare and Yngwie’s Rising Force.

Yeah, this is just special.

Not only for me , but for the sake of music and guitarists.

You see, this proves whilst we can all do amazing solo things on our own, these monster virtuoso players and guitar icons are willing to put their own history and ego aside to pull off something bigger than themselves.
Something we know we are incapable of doing alone.
Something that can only be done with 6 of us coming together.

Something special.

Humbly, all the video performances you’ve seen from the AXSTV show, I edited myself.
Not cause I wanted to, but because I had to.
I wanted you to see them the way I saw them in my head and heart.

Unfortunately, I ran out of time on this one right before it aired, as editing this monster was like climbing Mount Everest, Hard. But once you’re up there worth every sleepless night getting it done.

So I guess this is the “world premiere”of the Directors Cut.

Brian... on behalf of the Generation aXe boys, thanks for making our dream come true.

The Wrecking Crew

We are sad to report that singer, guitarist, and actor Trini Lopez has passed away today August 11, 2020 at the age of 83. He was born Trinidad López III on May 15, 1936 in Dallas,TX. He grew up on Ashland Street in the Little Mexico neighborhood of Dallas.

Lopez formed his first band in Wichita Falls, Texas, at the age of 15. Around 1955/56 Trini Lopez and his band worked at The Vegas Club in Dallas. In 1958, at the recommendation of Buddy Holly's father, Trini and his group "The Big Beats" went to producer Norman Petty in Clovis, New Mexico. Petty secured a contract for them with Columbia Records, which released the single "Clark's Expedition"/"Big Boy", both instrumental.

Lopez left the group and made his first solo recording, his own composition "The Right To Rock", for the Dallas-based Volk Records, and then signed with King Records in 1959, recording more than a dozen singles for that label, none of which charted.

In late 1962, after the King contract expired, Lopez followed up on an offer by producer S***f Garrett to join the post-Holly Crickets as vocalist. . After a few weeks of auditions in Los Angeles, that idea did not go through. He landed a steady engagement at the nightclub PJ's, where his audience grew quickly. He was heard there by Frank Sinatra, who had started his own label, Reprise Records, and who subsequently signed Lopez.

His debut live album, "Trini Lopez at PJ's", was released in 1963. The album included a version of "If I Had a Hammer", which reached number one in 36 countries (no. 3 in the United States), and was a radio favorite for many years. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.

He scored 13 chart singles through 1968, including "Lemon Tree" (1965), "I'm Comin' Home, Cindy" (1966), and "Sally Was a Good Old Girl" (1968). On the adult contemporary chart, he racked up 15 hits, including the top-10 singles "Michael" (1964), "Gonna Get Along Without Ya' Now" (1967), and "The Bramble Bush" (1967). Beyond his success on record, he became one of the country's top nightclub performers of that era, regularly headlining in Las Vegas.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Lopez moved into acting, though his film career was not as successful as his music. In 1993, a Golden Palm Star on the Palm Springs, California, Walk of Stars was dedicated to him.

On May 15, 2008, his 71st birthday, Lopez was inducted into the Las Vegas Walk of Stars. . Trini Lopez has continued to record, El Immortal was released in 2010, and in 2011 Trini released his 65th album "Into The Future".

Love this video from Don Peake!!! Don is a legendary LA session guitarist, who played on so many iconic records. He was generous enough to let me interview him for my course, Joes12.com - in which I break down all I know about practicing, timing, tone, touch, improvising, recording - and I interview many of my mentors, including legends like Don, Tommy Emmanuel, Eric Johnson, Robben Ford, Steve Vai, John Jorgenson and more.

We are all standing on the shoulders of giants - and when it comes to developing the craft of music, having good mentors is so important.

John Colianni Jazz

After touring many years as Mel Tomé's pianist, John Colianni has created his own style of modern, swinging jazz 💃 in the tradition of Art Tatum, Duke Ellington and Oscar Peterson.

Take a listen and see why why the NY Times called John "The Essence of a Swinging Pianist"! 🎹

Well, we're all kind of stuck at home in "lockdown" because of the pandemic and this crazy virus. I like to bounce ideas off my band to see what they think. So I had an idea for a groove...with social distancing and all, I passed it along to my pal Bob Welsh...in the lo-tech way I operate 🙂

Next thing I knew Kid Andersen was in the loop and it just kept rolling on from there! Come on and join us for our "Lockdown" jam. Thanks of course to my band mates, Bob Welsh and W***y Jordan, and to Kid Andersen and D'Mar for joining in on the big fun!

Have you ever seen a Tony Williams drum clinic? Here's an excerpt from a drum clinic Tony did in 1985 at the Zildjian drum day. It's quite amazing to get to have a close look on Tony's playing. I wish there were more of those tapes available for all of us drummers.
