Day 5 - Florence and Tuscan wine tour

This was one of my favorite days of the whole trip! We met the group and loaded on to the green monster... a large green 4x4 Mercedes!

🍷Two winery tours
🍝One amazing lunch with an incredible view
💙 8 friends ➕️ one awesome tour guide and a cool driver
🍷Lots of wines tasted
🌄Super curvy roads through the boondocks of Tuscany made for some incredible views!

After the tour was over and we were back in Florence we did a little shopping through town, checked out the Ponte Vecchio and took some sunset pics from near this incredible bridge.

We then happened to sneak into a restaurant near our apartment for dinner (they typically only take reservations but somehow we got in!) and had one of the best meals ever! So good, that we made reservations to return the next night! Our waiter thought we were joking!

We capped it off with a little visit to a bar just a few doors down from our apartment where we talked with two nice Italians and one informed us he'd been on route 66 through Springfield, Mo! Small world!

Although we’ve been home for a bit and I took a pause in posting… I still wanted to regale anyone interested in the rest of our incredible girls’ trip to Italy!

Day 4 – Arrivederci to Rome, and Salve to Florence!

We got up early to finish packing and meet our drivers outside to say goodbye to our amazing “home for 3 days” in Rome. It was a quick trip to the train station where we quickly learned it is a “wait then rush” situation when trying to catch your train… but we were prepared! We got on and off the train with no issues and were met by our lovely driver in Florence who whisked us off (after he loaded literally ALL of our bags into his van then tracked down our other van driver for us!) to our next beautiful apartment in Florence.

The amazing Luxury Renaissance Palace was actually a real old palace, complete with frescos on the ceiling and the most incredible stone staircase… and a hidden elevator through the bedroom closet that took a minute to figure out! We were met by the cutest little old Italian lady who spoke not one bit of English. She showed us the apartment and tried to explain which of the three keys was for which of the three doors. The keys were old skeleton keys and so cool! We may also have taken a minute to figure out how to exit the very complicated gate!

We ventured out into the city and found on this first day in Florence:
- Some of the best wine I’ve ever tasted with our lunch.
- The Pitti Palace, home of the famous Medici family
- The Boboli Gardens, that felt like we were climbing a mountain to get to the top of the lookout!
- A grassy area that overlooks the back of the Pitti Palace and the city where many of us “napped” a bit.
- The “gentlemen’s tower” in the Boboli Gardens, in which we were surprised to find a gorgeous garden up the stairs with a view of the Tuscan countryside that felt like it was pulled out of a magazine cover. Incredible!
- A hike back down the hill so we could hike back up a different hill to view the sunset from the Piazzale Michelangelo, which sits on a high platform and has one of the best views of the Duomo and the Ponte Vecchio.
- A reward to ourselves for making it to the top: a nice cold Aperol Spritz! The sunset was as beautiful as we were promised and the walk back down was also gorgeous.
- A dinner stop that turned out to be so good! I decided to try the pear tortellini with Tallegio cream sauce which sounds odd but was SO amazing! I would eat that again every day! Of course we also had red wine and bruschetta for an appetizer! So good!
- On our walk back “home” after dinner we stopped to look at the Arno River and I took a few photos of the gorgeous reflection of buildings on the water. It was so peaceful!

Rome day 3 -
🇮🇹 Piazza Navona and the beautiful fountains.

🇮🇹 Traditional Italian breakfast item: maritozzo, which is basically amazing soft bread stuffed with light, fluffy whipped cream. Yum!

🇮🇹 The gorgeous Victor Emmanuel II Monument and a ride on the glass elevator up to the Panoramic Terrace of the Vittoriano at the very top.

🇮🇹 Visit to the beautiful Santa Maria in Aracoeli Basilica that sits just behind the monument.

🇮🇹 Pizza with zucchini flowers and anchovies... trust me it was actually very good!

🇮🇹 An evening "after hours" tour of the Vatican Museums. Beautiful. Majestic. Amazing. The Sistine Chapel was smaller than I expected but gorgeous anyway. And the history from our tour guide provided some interesting perspectives. Taking this tour was so much better than fighting the daytime crowds I have heard so much about!

🇮🇹 Vatican Basilica in the twilight hours. It was breathtaking!

🇮🇹 We wrapped up the day with a wonderful meal with a very fun and entertaining waitress at a restaurant that was packed when we arrived but still managed to squeeze all 8 of us in! We found a lot of kindness in Italy. 💚🤍❤️

Rome day 2 - I think this day should be called "challenge accepted!"

Truth: Rome is a very walkable city
Disclaimer: If you try to see it all in a day you just might end up hitting 36K cobblestone steps, even if you start the day on a big bus tour!

🍕Testaccio food market = suppli, best pizza I've ever tasted (good choice, Lindsey!) and of course, wine!
🍊Aventine hill, orange garden, "secret" keyhole, rose garden
⛪️Super cool and creepy Basilica of San Clemente underground crypt that dates back to the 4th century

Truth: Trevi fountain and the Spanish Steps should be visited as early as you can manage. Night and day difference for amount of people the late afternoon prior to this early morning!

Truth: The evening food/wine tour was my favorite part of Rome. So many amazing new tastes, fantastic guide, lots of laughs and great company! Bruschetta, pesto, truffle honey, cheeses, prosecco, all the different Italian pork, more cheese, red wine, pizza, more red wine, cacio e peppe, barolo wine and of course, gelato!
If (or better yet, when!) you visit Italy... you absolutely MUST do a food tour!

Rome day 1 - Ciao Italy 🇮🇹

After 10+ hours on the plane, we were excited to finally be in Italy! It was a smooth transfer through the airport and to our apartment thanks to our driver who met us just outside customs. And we were so grateful he was parked under a covered area so we weren't soaked with the buckets of rain! The early morning rain stopped just in time for some exploring!

The day consisted of lots of sightseeing, eating some amazing food, getting lost on purpose and meeting with friends... some brand new! Spanish steps, Piazza del Popola, first taste of gelato, churches, Pantheon, the "wedding cake" monument, finding Rome's old drinking fountains, tiny elevators, amazing artichokes in the Jewish Ghetto, the best carbonara I've ever had during our first dinner as a group in Italy! And of course, wine and limoncello. 🍋

I ❤️ 🇮🇹!! What an incredible country filled with unreal beauty, delicious food and amazing people.

I love helping others plan and prepare for travel but of course I also love the joys of traveling myself! I was lucky to recently experience the "trip of a lifetime" to my bucket list destination: Italy! 🇮🇹 And even better, I was able to experience it with seven amazing ladies I get to call friends.

The last stop on our Sandals and Beaches Ocho Rios tour was the brand new, absolutely stunning Sandals Dunn's River. Completely remodeled from top to bottom and oh so stylish! It has changed quite a bit from the last time we were there in 2002!

The theme of this resort is waterfalls - to pay tribute to the resort's namesake, the gorgeous and famous Dunn's River Falls. Water is falling and flowing everywhere you look... from the front entrance to the lobby exit to the edge of the pools. And speaking of pools... absolutely spectacular! And the beach... powder white sand and mesmerizing turquoise water. What more can you ask for?

I was so grateful to the Sandals staff for showing me around this beautiful resort. I can't wait to come back and stay here in one of the unbelievable rooms I toured!

A quick but incredible stop at for a resort tour with the fabulous Kimberly (thank you again!). The energy at this resort was unreal and the families we saw were having such a great time! From the gorgeous views to Sesame Street characters galore to food and activities overload, this place truly has it all. And as a bonus... it's ALL INCLUDED!!!

Ocho Rios Jamaica is the home of majestic mountains, beautiful beaches, gorgeous turquoise water and some of the friendliest people I've ever met. It's also the home of resort where we enjoyed excellent accommodations, great entertainment and some amazing food! I'm so glad to have finally gotten a chance to stay here. Yah mon!
