Our last morning of hiking in Durmitor National Park in Montenegro. Clear skies but a bit breezy…stunning views all day as we hiked to a series of four small seasonal mountain lakes. Towering peaks and craggy ridges lined the trail, but the valleys were lush with grass and wildflowers.
This afternoon we head back to Dubrovnik for our last night in Croatia.
But we’ll be back next June!

Day 2 in Montenegro: We had a warm but hazy day for our first hike in Durmitor National Park, in Montenegro’s interior, near the border with Bosnia. Our trail led along the rim of the massive Tara River Canyon, one of the deepest in the world at over 4300 feet. We made our way back through some of the most charming mountain pastures, thick with wildflowers. In the afternoon the group split, some going on another hike to a nearby mountain lake, the rest hanging out at our small pool and hot tub, enjoying the mountain views and the local vintages. An amazing meal prepated by the girls at our hotel capped off a wonderful day!

Day 1 in Montenegro: Ascended the “Ladder of Kotor” a series of ancient stone steps overlooking the medieval town of Kotor. Great views of the bays all the way up, especially from the old fort at the top. Tonight we’re free to wander the charming town of Kotor….plenty of cobblestone streets, shops, and tiny squares to get lost in!

Day 6: Panoramic scenery all morninng as we hiked on Mosor Mountain. The path alternated between rough, rocky hillsides with expansive views of the Adriatic Sea and quiet forest trails that passed under the pines. Had a simple but excellent lunch at a forest refuge, then made our way back to our coach at the bottom. An afternoon wine tasting at a small family winery broke was a lot of fin! Then we settled back for a crazy scenic drive down the coast to Dubrovnik, with one of the most beautiful old city centers in Europe.

Day 5: From Split we had a morning ferry ride to nearby Hvar Island. Mountainous and rocky, Hvar is blessed with gorgeous scenery, a stunning coastline and a beautiful little port town. We hiked up to the abandoned vilage of Malo Grablje to explore the ruins and get a glimpse of how the locals lived in times past. Our seaside path eventually led us to picturesque Hvar Town, where we settled in to the best plate of mussels I’ve had in years (and I’ve had plenty), washed down with the local white wine.
Tonight we’re free to wander the magnificent old town of Split, centered on Diocletian’s Palace. Nighttime Split is a medieval wonderland of tiny streets, shops galore, restaurants and bars. Plenty to do and see…
Tomorrow we’ll have a morning hike on Mosor Mountain, then make our way to Dubrovnik.

Another fun Go Get Lost day in Iceland. Morning walk to city hall to study a room size 3 dimensional map of Iceland to see where we’ve been and where we’re going. Iceland has 105 lighthouses and we were able to tour one of them while our Icelandic guide sang inside of it. The acoustics inside it were amazing. Then, since we are in Iceland, we had to hit one more hot springs. Some of our braver clients took a quick swim in the North Atlantic - Wow!

Day 4: Yet another dramatic change of scenery as we hiked over 6 miles through Plitvice National Park. It has the most beautiful and bizarre landscape…thousands of ever-changing waterfalls created by the unique combination of water chemistry and topography. There’s no place like it in the world.
Afterwards we made our way to the seaside city of Split, and had an amazing meal in the old town, just steps from the Roman Palace of Diocletian. Monkfish and gnocchi in truffle sauce…

Have you ever baked bread in the sand… for 24 hours? Then cooled the pan in the North Atlantic? The rye bread was lathered in Icelandic butter, topped with smoked salmon and ‘devoured’ by awed GoGetLost hikers. True to our host country’s hardiness, we hiked in nearly 40 mph winds and even served up our signature trail lunch. Another memorable day ‘in the books’🇮🇸

Fun hike today around the hot springs of Hvergeroi, Iceland. Then visited a collapsed volcano, now filled with water. A wood fired pizza party in Olverk Brewery made for a memorable day in the Icelandic countryside.

Day 3: Our group had a unique experience hiking underground all morning at one of the world’s most bizarre cave systems…Skocjan in southern Slovenia. A private guide led them through miles of subterranean trails, caverns and waterfalls.
Afterwards we managed to stop in a small remote village that just happened to have a restaurant with (in my opinion) Michelin-level cuisine.

After a wonderful tour and lunch at an Icelandic Tomato Greenhouse, (these people know how to make bread), we took a dip in the oldest Icelandic hot springs. 41 degrees outside with 30 mile and hour winds did not deter anyone. The answer: 105 degree water with lots of fun. Notice our lifeguards - they’re the ones in yellow trying to stay warm.

Great Day 1 of our Hiking in Slovenia and Croatia tour! The weather didn’t fully cooperate, but we still had a fun day of hiking in the Vrata Valley of the Julian Alps, under the shadow of massive Triglav Mountain. Had lunch in a cozy mountain retreat sitting next to the woodstove, then continued on to our elegant and historic 5-Star hotel overlooking picturesque Lake Bled. Finished off the day with an excellent meal of Slovenian specialties at a local restaurant. Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny and dry for our hiking on Mt. Sija, stay tuned…

Spent most of my day visiting safari camps and lodges, six in all. Doesn’t sound like a lot but we traveled about 100 kilometers on rough, rutted, sometimes dusty, sometimes muddy and flooded roads. Nary a strip of asphalt in sight. Even managed to get stuck once, and stopped to assist another 4WD with a flat tire and broken jack. Huge elephant wandered by as we were changing the tire. He did offer to help but we declined.
I did manage to snap a few pics in between camps. And wow did I find some cool places for our future groups! Everything from remote (but luxurious) 5 star safari lodges overlooking stunning landscapes, to cozy tented accommodations (with ensuite bathrooms) in the midst of the bush, often situated in the path of the migration. I look forward to crafting some awesome safari experiences for our groups in the future….

Another stellar day…
Started off this morning in the cool fog and thick forest of the Ngorongoro highlands. Within an hour we were down on the Ndutu plains, an endless expanse of grass under a sky without limits. Stopped to visit one of the Maasai villages and had a fascinating chat with Saitoti, the 27 year-old village headman’s son. The Maasai men have multiple wives (not sure of the wisdom of that), and of course many children. Saitoti explained that his father had twelve wives, with a separate hut for each, and several children with each. He spends each night in a different hut in order to keep all his wives happy. When I asked how many siblings Saitoti had, he said he didn’t know for sure because they don’t really keep track of it. “But probably around 48 or 50.”
Me: “Wow! That’s impressive! How old is your father?”
Saitoti: “98”
Me: (Speechless)
Midday found us still crossing the plains, now in the Serengeti. Literally tens of thousand of wildebeest were moving with us. At any time you could look out and there were hundreds…as far as you could see. Came across our first lions (saw 5), hyenas and vultures on a carcass, giraffes by the dozen, too many impala and gazelle to count, thousands of zebra, a herd of cape buffalo that stretched over a mile, a serval cat hunting in the grass, a troop of baboons, and more colorful birds than you can imagine. And we weren’t even trying to look for animals! Just driving between camps!
Tonight we’re at a mobile camp deep in the Serengeti. Had a wonderful meal in the main camp tent, now I might join the others at the campfire.
BTW, I think there are still a few spots on our February safari next year…grab ‘em! You won’t regret it….

Day 2: It’s going to be difficult to explain just how amazing and “off-the-beaten-path” today was. We left Tarangire early this morning and drove into the Ngorongoro highlands. Forested hills and cooler temps at over 5000 feet. After an hour on a dirt road we put the land cruiser in 4WD and went off road for another hour.

Eventually we found the Hadzabe tribe, a small group of Bushmen living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. They don’t participate in any of the trappings of civilization. Illiterate but masters of the wild. Five of them (including a father-son duo) took me on a hunting trip.

One of the coolest experiences ever! With their homemade bows (and poison arrows) they stalk and kill birds, monkeys, baboons, impala, and even the rare elephant that wanders onto their tribal land. Then they bring it back to their simple camp, clean it, start a fire (with sticks) cook and eat it. Doing this with them makes you truly appreciate how skilled they are.

Their language is a very difficult-to-duplicate tribal tongue, sprinkled with clicks and pops. They had me help make the fire and even with the language barrier we had a lot of laughs at my horrible technique.

Later in the day we visited another tribe, the Datoga. They are pastoralists who herd cattle and grow crops (and make beer from aloe). They build simple huts and live in a “boma”, a group of huts protected from large predators by a wall of thorns. They also are known as excellent blacksmiths, melting down scrap metal to fashion into intricate bracelets, knives, and arrowheads they trade to the Hadzabe.

As evening approached we made our way to our highland lodge for the night, but not before touring five (yes five) different lodges. Another awesome day on safari in Tanzania!
