2024 marks fifty seasons of Saint Charles Christmas Traditions®! Christmas Traditions® has humble beginnings as a small gathering of Main Street residents and merchants in the mid-1970s during Main Street’s period of revitalization. They sang Christmas carols while pulling a Yule Log down the street and eventually ended up at a bonfire by the river. Then known as the Christmas Walk, this event wasn’t open to the public until the late 1970s, when five merchants pledged $100 each to promote the event as open for guests to come and celebrate old-world holiday customs in the charming historic district. Read more about the history of the festival, and get excited for our 50th anniversary festivities!

Discover The Little Hills

Whether strolling down the brick lines streets for that perfect Main Street Instagram moment, or driving the scenic route to Historic Missouri Wine Country for a deliciously relaxing afternoon, you are sure to enjoy our city. St. Charles is a dynamic destination for millions of visitors each year, with good reason! Join us and experience the charm and beauty of a city that has been welcoming visitors since 1769.

Founded in 1769 as Les Petites Cotes ("The Little Hills") by French Canadian fur trader Louis Blanchette. The Spanish government controlled the Mississippi Valley between 1762-1800, and for a dozen years "The Little Hills" became "San Carlos Borromeo." In 1804, on the banks of the mighty Missouri River, Lewis and Clark met here to begin their westward expedition. Shortly thereafter, the city became known as "Saint Charles."

Statesmen decided Missouri's First State Capitol should be here between 1821 and 1826. Throughout the 19th Century, German settlers developed a wine region. Early explorers and pioneers made St. Charles their place of choice for shopping in the 19th century. Today, you can walk those same brick-lined streets, along the Nationally Registered Historic District, and shop in those same buildings.

Main Street St. Charles is full of wonderful shops, fantastic restaurants, and historical attractions. If you're looking for the perfect gift or just want to treat yourself to something special, there's something on Main Street to suit every taste. See our detailed map to help you explore.
