Eight historical paintings in total in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, a highly symbolic place. Two of these have past Spanish🇪🇸 history:

First, Landing of Columbus; showing Christopher Columbus raising the royal banner of the Reino de Castilla. The captains of the ships Niña and Pinta follow, carrying the banner of the Catholic Monarchs, Isabel I de Castilla and Fernando II de Aragon.

Discovery of the Mississippi; featuring the Spaniard Hernando de Soto riding a white horse. He is believed to be the first European to see the Mississippi River in 1541.

Fuente de Cibeles; The sculptural group in its centre represents Cybele, a Phrygian earth and fertility deity. El Escorial consists of two architectural complexes: the royal monastery itself and La Granjilla de La Fresneda. During the 16th and 17th centuries, they were places in which the power of the Spanish monarchy and the ecclesiastical predominance of the Roman Catholic religion in Spain found a common architectural manifestation. It has become a monastery of the Order of Saint Augustine.

Something we people from Guadalajara sometimes forget is that, according to INE data in 2023, we are the second most populated city in the Castilla-La Mancha region. This area in Spain has five provinces: Guadalajara, Toledo, Albacete, Cuenca, and Ciudad Real. Not a joke!

Checkpoint,

The arrow points to Guadalajara, the city and capital of the province named after the same name. As we can see, it is fairly close to Madrid.

Every red star represents villages or sites to consider when visiting Guadalajara province for its historical significance.

Every green star or circle indicates spots to keep in mind when exploring Guadalajara province for its natural beauty.

Additionally, we are working on a couple of lists highlighting attractions in Guadalajara, the city, as well as restaurants where you can enjoy typical meals in both the city and the province.

Our 100th post here! Only the beginning…

Calle Mayor,

Centrally located street in Guadalajara where you can experience the city’s historical atmosphere. Currently, it begins at San Ginés, mentioned in our previous post, and ends at the Palacio del Infantado, which was also covered in a post and is likely the most prominent monument in Guadalajara today

San Ginés in Plaza de Santo Domingo,

Its construction began in 1561, when members of the Dominican order were asked to design a large temple. The original plans could not be carried out and, despite the donation of 1,000 ducats from Archbishop Bartolomé de Carranza, the works were interrupted in 1566. For this reason, the dimensions of the current church are half of those initially planned.

The temple of San Ginés should follow the model of Santo Tomás in Ávila or San Esteban in Salamanca, having a façade of the “tapestry” or “altarpiece” type, with two large buttresses and bell gables at the top, and a large arch to embed the access door

Tamajón,

Two kilometres to the north is the Hermitage of the Virgen de los Enebrales, the local Patron saint. Built in the 16th century, it was extended in the 18th century.

The “Enchanted City of Tamajón” is also close by, an area where the local limestone has been eroded and forms fanciful shapes and caves

Cifuentes,

The origin, like many in the region, dates back to the times of the conquest of the Taifa of Toledo by the Christians of Castile, by the end of the 11th century. In the 12th century, with the reconquest of Cuenca, it became the head of the archpriest, growing and becoming the largest urban center in the region
