Did you know the Spanish occupied Cumberland Island for nearly 100 years?

From 1587 to the early 1660s, Cumberland’s history is a tale worthy of a big-picture film. Spain’s settlement of Cumberland Island included a fort and several Catholic missions, including a large one located on the island's south end, the San Pedro de Mocama Mission. This period featured the Spanish conversion of the Timucuan Native Americans to Catholicism, conflicting Native American interests, including the Guale Rebellion of 1597, European pirate invaders, and ongoing pressure from the British to push the Spanish further south. British pressure would later reach a pivotal point with the arrival of James Oglethorpe, the founder of the British colony of Georgia, to Cumberland in 1736.
