Judy P. on our Yellowstone (WY) Blackwater Creek Ranch Ride:
"I’m going to use the over used “trip of a lifetime” to describe this trip. As a lifelong equestrian this was my first opportunity to ride in mountains. That was truly an experience, the views are breathtakingly incredible! I would say if you’ve any back or knee issues this ride would be a challenge. The rides up the mountains are easy enough, it’s coming down your knees may be screaming!
The staff at Blackwater Creek Ranch were very professional & courteous to our needs as well as our safety. Gen Mgr Kylee Cromer saw to everything, our cooks Michael & John Blue cooked incredible gourmet quality meals, our Wrangler Ellen Edgy had great stories and knowledge of the area which made the history of the area come to life.

This is grizzly country & we were even lucky enough to see one! Fortunately it was heading in the opposite direction from us at least 50 yds away at a rather fast pace. Note: don’t ever think you can out run a grizzly.

The proximity to Cody WY was a bonus to work in some souvenir shopping. The day trip to Yellowstone was a must see, our guide Janay Brun was very knowledgeable and made every geyser we saw interesting and even the site of Old Faithful was a thrill.

I’d definitely recommend this adventure, one of my favorite rides was to June’s Ridge, it was like being on top of the world.

This Special Package is Short Breaks and all fun: Scotland
ARRIVAL
Arrive to Inverness and make your way independently to the hotel near our home base for the ride.

Briefing over dinner.

DAY 1
Today sees us climb Carnferg, the local hill which provides breathtaking panoramic views of Deeside, Cairngorms and beyond.

The rolling green hills and lush greenery that we began our ride with quickly give way to rough but beautiful heathery slopes as we climb higher and higher to reach the summit of Carnferg (525m). Here we reach the memorial cairn at the summit which is over 100 years old and take in the panoramic view that surrounds us.

Red kites and eagles soar overhead and on a clear day, you can see Morven, Mount Keen, Mount Battock and beyond into the heart of the Cairngorms.

DAY 2
Today's ride will give riders the opportunity to explore the long distance route called 'The Fungle' in both directions. Each day we will pick up the trail and follow it in a different direction - exploring varied scenery each day.

DAY 3
On our last day, we will explore the Forest of Birse. We climb a smaller hill called Lamahip and follow a narrow steep trail through the heather to admire the slopes of Carnferg from a different angle. We descend to the Waters of Feugh where we will visit a beautiful stone church from the 1800's, stepping inside feels like going back in time.

Here we have lunch in the trees next to the church, enjoying the chattering waters of the Feugh. After lunch, we follow the river through the glen before we climb again for more beautiful views over towards Finzean.

In autumn, the afternoon on this day is the best time to hear stags roar.

Departure at the end of the day by independent transfer.

Looking for an itinerary closer to home? May we suggest riding Yellowstone, and staying at a ranch in Wyoming?
Set along the banks of the scenic Shoshone River and Blackwater Creek, the ranch is just 15 miles from the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park. Since 1915, Blackwater Creek Ranch has hosted guests from around the world amid the mountains of the Shoshone National Forest, where Blackwater Creek flows into the Shoshone River. Theodore Roosevelt once described the area as “the most scenic 50 miles in the U.S.”

This Yellowstone Pop-Up Ranch will run from May 26 through September 28, 2024. Reservations must be 3 or 6 nights. 3-night stays will be Sunday to Wednesday, or Wednesday to Saturday. 6-night stays will be Sunday to Saturday.

Classic dude ranch adventures will include horseback riding and hiking in the Wyoming wilderness, archery and sport shooting, fly fishing the creek and river, as well as evening entertainment. AND a portion of the proceeds benefit the historic O.T.O. Dude Ranch, where we hosted our very first Pop-Up Ranch!

***NOTE: This ride is quite technical due the the terrain. Most (if not all) of the riding walking and amazingly scenic.

Some highlights to look forward to during the week will include:
– For six-night stays only, a tour of the Yellowstone National Park
– Rafting on the Yellowstone River with Wyoming River Trips (available for 6 night stays and 3 night Sunday-Wednesday stays)
– Attending Cody Nite Rodeo (available for 6 night stays and 3 nights Wednesday-Saturday stays)
– On Saturday there will be a final ride at the ranch, “Happy Trails Brunch Ride,” to bid our guests farewell.

New Year's Eve... on horseback... in Spain... what's not to love?
DEC. 26
Meeting and transfer from Almeria airport, bus station or train station or Granada airport to the equestrian center. Presentation of the ride, dinner and overnight in a nice hotel in San Jose.

DEC. 27
Rodalquilar - El Playazo.
In the morning, after breakfast, the guide will assign your horse and you will have a short ride in the arena before leaving for the trail ride. For the first day of riding, we will visit the eastern part of the Natural Park.

We will head towards the Torre de los Lobos (Wolf Tower) where we can have a view on the whole natural park and, if the weather is clear, the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada. We will ride to the beach of "El Playazo", which was a known stage of pirates. Picnic by the sea.

Then we leave by crossing a palm tree oasis fed by small water sources. About 5 hours horseback riding.

DEC. 28
Rodalquilar - The Isleta del Moro - San José.
We will leave Rodalquilar by a great path which borders the whole coast. These trails were formerly used to monitor the coast in the event of an attack by Pirates, which explains the presence of small castles and watchtowers.

With its small oasis of palm trees, we will have lunch in the form of a picnic on the beach of Escullos. About five and a half hours of riding.

DEC. 29
San José - Beach of Genoveses - San José.
Genoveses, Monsul, Media Luna, El Arrecife de las Sirenas are the last wild beaches of the Mediterranean with their white sand dunes. Here were filmed famous movies: Indiana Jones, Lawrence of Arabia, A Fistful of Dollars.

For lunch, we will have a picnic at the foot of the "el romeral" cortijo, one of the typical facilities that used to be, for a time, housing for the farmers of the area.

In the afternoon, we will ride in the valley "del Tesorillo". About 6 hours on horseback.

DEC. 30
San José - Las Negras.
To the north of the park are the mountains of the Sierra de Gata which have preserved the boilers of the ancient volcanoes, surrounded by a lunar landscape and original villages like "Los Albaricoques" where were shot several famous westerns: For a Handful of dollars , Le Bon la Brute and the Ugly, etc. The streets have names such as: Clint Eastwood, Sergio Leone ...

Lunch at one of the park's most famous sites, El Cortijo del Fraile. It is here that the events that inspired Federico Garcia for his work "Bodas de Sangre" (The Wedding of Blood) took place.

DEC. 31
Fernán Pérez - Golden Mine - The Negras.
We will take the old trail of the gold mine, we will pass through small ravines that were once the only connection between the farms of the mountains and the sea. Then we will cross the crater of the volcano which now forms the Valley of Rodalquilar and we will discover the walls of minerals that still hide gold and finally, we will visit the old installations of the mine that worked from 1933 to 1986.

Time to clean up and get ready for our festive New Year’s Eve dinner.

JAN. 1
The Negras-Rodalquilar.
Las Negras is a beautiful place, of a spectacular geology in a fishermen's atmosphere. At the far end of the bay is El Cerro Negro (La Colline Noire), an impressive rock formation that has the appearance of a lava language, witness to what was the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata.

In Las Negras, you will find water-irrigated orchards that come from small fresh water flows of the Rambla de las Agüillas and accumulated in small ponds close to the sea.

Lunch will be traditional Paella in a typical restaurant at the seaside. About 3 hours 30 of riding.

JAN. 2
Transfer to the airport after breakfast.

Package Special: Scotland Royal Mile Ride
SAMPLE ITINERARY - TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF THE POSSIBILITIES FOR 4 FIRST DAYS OF DAILY RIDING.
After breakfast you’ll make (on your own) the short drive to the equestrian center, approximately 15 minutes down the road where you’ll find Susy and her fit and fun team of horses. During the week, you’ll be riding different horses which affords you the chance to really see how well trained, responsive and utterly sweet every single one is.

You’ll have a quick safety briefing and then it’s time to mount up! These horses are all very tall and solid, so perfectly fun for this varied ride! You’ll head off down the road and into the first of the forested rolling hills above the local village of Cardrona. After you’ve had a chance to get comfortable, the guide will afford you ample bursts of fun canters - and to feel the prowess of your equine partner.

Today's ride takes you to a different area of this lush countryside. Long trots and canters afford a great way to experience the fells, see some bucolic moors and marvel at the 360 degree views. Everyone talks about the Scottish Highlands but this area, with the common lands, is equally enchanting and vast - don’t be surprised if it bewitches you.

What’s it like to gallop up a vast hill - stop to catch your breath (and let your horse do the same), turn your head in every direction and see nothing but sheep dotted rolling hills that go on as far as the eye can see? It’s almost impossible to express in mere words how utterly vast this area is….

And when you think about the hundreds of years of history - people that have marched and ridden in the same spot you are now - people that have loved and created families on their centuries old estates and farms - you are riding through history in a way that few people ever will. And while this history is utterly gorgeous, it’s filled with stories of struggle, battles, failures as well as epic successes. Look around, take in the view, listen to the whisper of all the stories, listen to your horse's gentle breath, feel yourself connecting to this land, this culture, this life.

Here’s hoping the sun shines brightly for you again today - but even if you get a bit of liquid sunshine - the hues of the Borders are still remarkable. Today’s ride takes you through common land, down old country lanes that were once used for getting to market and past quaint village homes. It’s not hard to forget you are in the 21st century as everything you see and the trails you ride will cast you back to a quieter, more provincial time when these lands were controlled by the wealthy landowners and the staff all lived on the estates.

Now that you’ve had the chance to really get the feel for Susy’s horses, today’s ride takes you further afield - over to the coastline of Scotland! The John Muir Country Park awaits you and your horses love being there as much as you - the salt air, the breeze off the water, the verdant farmland - and the best of all - the wide open and endless beach! Riding on the beach is, and remains, not just an all time favorite of clients, but in the top 3 bucket list items for most riders - and if you’ve not experienced it before - you are in for a treat!

* Itinerary may be changed if necessary. This is an indicative description of the trails to be explored on your amazing week. Due to weather, footing or unforeseen circumstances, this itinerary is subject to change. Days listed are not necessarily in the order of riding during your stay and some days may not be available every week.

Featured Package: British Columbia Lodge Ride.
Please note that the following itinerary is an example for the ride. The actual days may vary from ride to ride depending on the season and local weather conditions.

DAY 1
On Sunday morning your adventure begins with a flight from Vancouver over the Coast Mountains and British Columbia. You’ll arrive at Chilko Lake and this exclusive lodge in time for a tasty lunch and a cold drink. Afterwards, you’ll gather on the deck to go over the week ahead. Your hosts, the McLean family, will show you your cabin, then lead you to the barn to meet your horse and receive safety tips for the trail, saddling techniques, and western riding instructions. After this, guests head out for an afternoon ride. This ride ensures that you, your horse and your saddle are a great fit for the week ahead. You’ll then return to the lodge in time for a cold drink and a delicious dinner.

DAY 2
After a filling breakfast – think bacon, eggs, potatoes, pancakes, fruit, cereals and yoghurt – you’ll head straight to the stables. Today is a full day’s ride out from the lodge to explore
Ts’yl-os Provincial Park – roughly 233,000 hectares of rugged mountains, clear blue lakes, glaciers, alpine meadows and waterfalls! You’ll return to the lodge in time for another tasty communal dinner and a glass of wine as you wind down for the night.

DAY 3
Today, after you emerge from your log cabin, soak up your spectacular surrounds and tuck into another hearty breakfast, you’ll head out for another unmistakably Canadian adventure. As you gain confidence in your horse and become more familiar with the terrain, the riding starts to speed up, with more canters along the open meadows and Chilko River.

DAY 4
Another beautiful day’s ride awaits today, as you journey to the summit of Mount Tulin. After the long climb, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views of the Coast Mountains and Chilcotin Plateau – and a picnic lunch! Photo opportunities abound, so be sure to pack your camera in your saddlebag. Returning from the mountain, you’ll have some time to relax in your cabin or wander around the grounds before regrouping with your fellow riders and guides to share stories, laughter and a hot meal.

DAY 5
Today is a rest day for the horses after their long summit up Mount Tulin. It’s also an amazing opportunity to see Chilko Lake from the water! After breakfast you’ll hop aboard a boat to take a scenic tour up the lake, witnessing its untouched beauty up close. Chilko Lake is surrounded by magnificent mountain peaks, pristine forests and ice fields. It’s fed by dozens of pure, icy glacial streams, which give the lake its vibrant turquoise colour. A day on Chilko Lake is not to be missed!

DAY 6
You will be back in the saddle after breakfast this morning, enjoying long, winding canters through the pristine wilderness as you ride along one of the most memorable trails, the ‘Roller Coaster’. We don’t want to give away too much, but this is a ride that will give you a serious confidence boost AND a thrill to remember!

DAY 7
On day seven you’ll enjoy more long canters along the picturesque ridge of Chilko River, with spectacular views of Chilko Valley. At the end of the ride you’ll un-tack your horses on the banks of Chilko River and release them for a refreshing swim across the river back to the lodge. You’ll then be transferred back to the lodge by boat for your final farewell dinner with your riding companions.

DAY 8
Enjoy one last hearty breakfast at the lodge, then pack your bags, bid a fond farewell to the lodge and horses, and board the flight back to Vancouver (departs around 9:00am and arrives around 1.00pm).
