Just out here cherry-picking some of Routt County’s finest dirty roads… A few from last week’s adventures.
Always a treat when bike camp rolls into town.
I love the focus of why we are all in the outdoor industry…
Courage Classic Bicycle Tour 🙏🏼
Always feels good to be involved with this magical event. The Courage Classic raises over 3 million dollars for Children’s Hospital Colorado . And offers rider’s some of Colorado’s most scenic road cycling.
Highly recommended!

Courage Classic Bicycle Tour. Day 2.
It was one of those days… The bikes were dialed, road conditions were favorable, the weather was mint, and everyone was stoked!
Day 1. Oak Creek to Steamboat
Conditions were good. So quiet this time of the year.
And these two ladies were smiling ear to ear while riding the Express eGravel Bikes. I must say, these bikes are extremely well designed, and seemed to tie the dynamic of this group together nicely — allowing everyone a chance to ride together.
Let’s do it again… 🙌
2023. You have been real. 🙏🏼
Into 2024 we roll. Let’s ride!!!

There’s something special about the dirt roads surrounding Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
I should know. I’ve been playing on them for 35 years now. And I just…can’t…get…enough. 🙏🏼
___
We do custom bike tours.
And when in Steamboat, they usually involve some of that “Champagne Gravel.” And maybe a gourmet lunch on a random dirt road…
Let’s build something great. Reserve your 2024 dates today!
Thankful for bicycles and the good people who ride them.
Be safe. Eat good food. And ride you bike as much as possible...
Happy Thanksgiving y’all!
This fall has been one for the “books” in the Colorado high country. 🍂
I’ve been fortunate to get the chance to scout out some new roads, routes, and future trip destinations...
Here’s a few from the past couple of weeks.
Not all Steamboat Gravel Camps are created equal...
Wanting to explore Steamboat’s rural dirt roads and see what this “Champagne Gravel” is all about?
Join us, as our 2024 Steamboat Gravel Camp dates are now live.
As many of you already know, my name is JR Thompson and I am the owner here at Veloscapes. I’ve been riding the rural dirt roads around Steamboat for over 35 years — way before gravel riding was even a thing... And back then we use to call it county road riding — but that’s another conversation.
I’m super proud of the camp we have designed and can assure you it would be the most authentic one you will find.
We would love to show you around.
Let’s ride!

I’ve got a little helper today.
📍In search of the Champagne Gravel...
Being on course during providing rider support — I could see how many people were blown away and truly stoked to be riding the rural dirt roads of Routt County.
From day one this event has amazed me and it’s nice to hear from so many people just how good the gravel riding is ... in my backyard! 🙌

And if you’re looking for a little more intimate experience riding the gravel roads of Routt County we would love to show you around. 😏
One from 2023. Definitely one of my favorite roads in Routt County...
Always a treat when the crew comes to town.
Summer Rides ✊
Day two of the Courage Classic offered riders a variety of routes to choose from including the option to summit Loveland Pass which tops out at 11,991 ft. 🙌
Always feels good to help support the Courage Classic!
This two-day ride happens to roll through some of Colorado’s most beautiful high country roads and raises a lot of money for Children’s Hospital Colorado.
This is definitely something we can get behind. 🙏🏼
Another Ranch Rally in the books. And this one was special for sure!
We have always provided ride support for the Moots Ranch Rally. But when from Moots asked me to take on a larger role this year — I knew we had to make it happen.
Moots is a brand we believe in and can certainly get behind. Moots crafts handbuilt titanium bicycles in our hometown of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. And they do it for all the right reasons.
The Ranch Rally vibe is so refreshing. No number plates, no timing chips... Missing are photos of the post ride lunch, evening social, and the Moots factory tours.
You don’t have to own a Moots to ride in the Ranch Rally, but you will want one if you do.
It is Moots Ranch Rally () time here in Steamboat Springs.
Conditions are mint right now!
A huge shout out to for taking such good care of us!
The dirty roads are calling…
MOOTS RANCH RALLY 2023 EVENT DATE: JUNE 10TH, 2023 We are excited to host the Moots Ranch Rally 2023. This year’s Rally will use the gravel roads right outside the Moots […]

Conditions are getting good! 💥
Our first Dirty Roads 101 Gravel Cycling Challenge is in the books. We had a few virtual riders take the challenge, and thanks to a solid posse of about 25 riders here in Steamboat Springs.
Thank you to everyone who came out to pay homage to our public dirt roads.

After a big winter the dirt roads of Routt County, Colorado are starting to wake up.
Time to ride! 🙏🏼
Out test riding one of our latest rental bikes. With some Veloscapes upgrades of course. 👊
Lunch stop. Somewhere in Wyoming...
Good food ... means making good decisions while on the bike.
A balmy 38° never felt so good. 🙄
Independence Pass. Circa 2021.
Dreaming of warmer days...
This climb (starting from the Aspen side) is probably the most European feeling mountain pass in Colorado, and is the second highest paved through road in all of North America — topping out at 12,095 ft. The road is narrow and consistently undulating. And it’s hard, here are some numbers: 19 miles, 4,000+ ft. of climbing, with an average grade of 4.5%.
Oh, and typically for at least a couple of weeks in May — you can ride it without any cars.
Got to go. I’ve got more shoveling to do!
Thankful for bicycles!
