Hey everyone! I just wanted to give you a heads up that we will be taking a break from the Airbnb world for a while. So, no bookings will be available in 2023. We will let you know if that changes in subsequent years. Thanks so much to all of our fabulous guests over the last few years. It’s been incredible to get to share Stehekin with so many awesome people.

Hey Everyone, Nathan here. As some of you may have heard Patty Schrag, my dear friend who runs the Rainbow Cabin, had an accident and is pretty banged up. We are all wishing her a speedy recovery, and I know she has the spirit to make it through this challenge. Hang in there Patty!

John and Patty Wilsey who run Stehekin Fishing Adventures and the Stehekin Cedar Cabin have graciously offered to help out with the Rainbow Cabin while Patty Schrag recovers. New bookings are paused for the moment but existing bookings are all good. Some bookings in May and June were initially cancelled as we figured out a plan, but will still be honored and can be rebooked thorough Patty Wilsey directly. If you are in this group you should see more information in your inbox in your Airbnb account.

Finally, those who know and love Patty are raising funds to help her with her upcoming recovery period. You can find more info here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/patty-schragpa

It was a lovely day to go pick some apples at Buckner Orchard. We got a bag full of romes and Jonathans. They are perfectly ripe and super yummy. It looks like freezing temps will be here soon, so we wanted to get them now!

We're famous! Your host and co-host appear in the Stehekin Fishing Adventures ad in the 2020 Stehekin Guide Book. This was floating down the Stehekin River last year- what a fun surprise to find this while flipping through the guide. Thanks John and Patty Wilsey (and Rene)!

Dale England gave us a lift up from Chelan in the helicopter and we got some great shots of the property from the air. These give you a lot more perspective on where it's located in relation to the falls and the river. The cabin is a little tough to see as it's tucked into the trees up at the front of the property. Rainbow Falls was really running!

A cool video of a few days in Stehekin.

We visited Stehekin for the first time and fell in love with the place. So we made this video to remember our time there. This was all shot on a GoPro Hero 7 Black.

The new adirondack chairs for the fire pit came up on the barge this week. We've already spent a couple of pleasant evenings sitting around the fire and watching the falls. I imagine there will be fire restrictions not too long from now, so it's nice to take advantage of it while we can.

After the roar of the falls, walking down Buckner Lane by the irrigation channel coming back to the cabin was very peaceful. Here is a quick video to capture the vibe.

Working up at the cabin today I could hear the falls were really roaring, so when I had a few minutes break I walked over and grabbed this quick video. I walked up to the base of the higher falls too, but I was instantly soaked and couldn’t get a video!

The Nintendo Classic Mini and Atari Flashback are headed up the cabin at the end of May. The Nintendo has 30 built in games and the Atari has 120, all from the 80s. So, older guests can relive their misspent youth, and kids can marvel at how basic computer games were in the olden days!

Flashback Friday! This is the original drawing from November 2017 of what we thought the cabin should look like. It's actually not too far off what we wound up building. The kitchen layout is a bit different, and we went a little crazy with adding more windows...but the basic idea is the same.

One of the big choices when we renovated the cabin was how to heat it, since it does get cold and snowy in the Valley. Without a reliable heater there is a real risk of having pipes freeze up here, and our guests might get a little chilly! To make it easy for guests, and for energy efficiency, we chose an electric heat pump/air conditioner, commonly called a mini-split. We also added in radiant floor heating in the basement and bathroom to make sure those spots stayed warm. However, that meant we were entirely reliant on electricity. Stehekin has its own small hydroelectric plant that is an isolated power grid, and we do lose power from time to time. So, we decided we should install our own propane generator. We went with a 19.5kw Generac and put it on an automatic transfer switch so in just a few seconds the generator kicks on automatically and power is back in the cabin. To keep the noise down for guests we installed it well over a hundred feet away and behind the shop. Here are a couple of shots from the installation process.

Piper and I took a break from hanging pictures to watch Big Hero 6 in the basement den. The player handles Blu-Ray and DVD, so feel free to bring your own movies to watch. There is also a spare HDMI connector if you want to connect a laptop (just remember, there is no internet). In addition, we left a few favorite movies up the cabin:

Back to the Future 3 movie collection
Harry Potter complete 8 move collection
How to Train your Dragon 3 movie collection
Indiana Jones 4 move collection
Shrek 4 movie collection
Big Hero Six
Frozen
The Princess Bride
Trolls

There is a little games and toys cubby under the stairs in the basement. Some of these may turn out to have too many little parts and cards, but right now the cubby has the following:

Mancala
Rummikub
Punderdome
Brain Quest
Timeline (Events)
Perplexus
Laser Maze
Apples to Apples Junior
Sorry!
Dr. Eureka
Connect4
Ticket to Ride
Playing cards
Playskool Kart

We took a few books up to the cabin so folks will have something to read on a lazy day. Piper compiled a quick list of what's there. There are a few for the kids and a few for the grownups. I'm sure the list will change over time.

Kid books:
Children’s ocean life encyclopedia
Dougal Dixon’s Dinosaurs
Peppa Pig First Sleepover
Clifford the Big Red Dog
Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Guardians of Gahoole (1-3)
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Grownup Books:
The Hunt for Red October
The Bourne Identity
The HitchHiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (a trilogy in 5 parts)
Ender’s Game
Jurassic Park
The Da Vinci Code
Neverwhere
Band of Brothers

The kitchen is set up for cooking big family meals, with new stainless steel appliances, all of the cookware you need, and lovely red Fiestaware place settings! Of course, there is also a coffee pot for those of us who need the morning fix. The bar seats four, and is a great hangout anytime.

The original cabin didn't have a bathroom, so adding one was a big part of the renovations. The new bathroom adds a touch of luxury, with marble counters and tiles, bronze fixtures, and a heated stone floor. There is a tub with a shower, which is a great spot to relax and unwind.

The main floor of the cabin is one big great room, with a small sitting area, a kitchen table, a bar, and the kitchen. The original 1930s cabin was the front half of the room, and the kitchen is the new addition space. We tried to recycle the old materials wherever we could, in things like the beams, the bar facing, and the undersides of the stairs.

Hiking and fishing are great...but sometimes it's nice to hang out in the den with some friends and watch a movie or read a book too. There is a 55 inch 4K TV and a DVD player, with a small selection of movies to chose from. The couch converts into a queen bed, and sleeps two adults.

The basement bedroom is a great hideaway from everyone else in the cabin. It has it's own heated floors, so you can make it nice and cozy. The bunks are a full on the bottom and a twin on top. Adults and kids love to sleep in them...but only the kids admit it!

One of the coolest features of the cabin is the ladder to get from the kitchen up to the office in the loft. There are stairs of course, but who doesn't want to take the shortcut? We added removable boards and a fabric cover for safety, so you can chose to use the ladder or not.

Piper spent the week helping with final prep on the cabin before guests start arriving in May (assuming we're all safe to do so!) She decided this spot in the kitchen needed a bit more color, so she got out her colored pencils and drew this incredible Rainbow trout for the spot. I was so impressed!
