The plains of northeastern Colorado stretch out before you. You are probably expecting miles of agricultural fields and boundless open skies. But do you also know the stories and secrets of this region?

You're about to encounter welcoming small towns, unique historic sites, and surprising recreation opportunities...all infused with a pioneer heritage that stems from one of the most exciting eras of American history. As you listen to the colorful tales of life on the prairie -- then and now -- make sure you stop along the way to experience this place in person. I promise your adventures out here won't break the bank, and you won't have to fight crowds of tourists. What you will find is a taste of everything that makes rural Colorado so special from proud traditions and rich culture to extraordinary remnants of the Wild West -- from the I-76 Speedway to Prewitt Reservoir.

This tour follows I-76, which is the way most people travel through this area. Most of the towns and communities -- like Julesburg, Ovid, Sterling -- that make this area special are just off of I-76 so we will be telling you stories of those places as you travel on the Interstate. We highly recommend stopping in to visit the communities to truly experience this region.

The main feature along the Pawnee Pioneer Trails Scenic and Historic Byway is the Pawnee Buttes. So when making your plans, either in the morning or afternoon, schedule time to drive out to the trailhead. The buttes are in the northeastern edge of the Colorado Piedmont. :)

With over 39,000 miles of marked trails, there’s plenty to explore in Colorado! Protect plants and prevent erosion by enjoying scenic views from the trail. If you find that the vistas have literally taken your breath away, be sure to catch a break on durable surfaces like rock, dirt, and dry grass.
