“A picture is worth a thousand words”

In 1986, a committee of forward thinking citizens began a project to portray the history of the community - and of the country - through murals on buildings throughout downtown Steubenville. Over the years, more than 25 larger-than life paintings appeared in the city. Some no longer exist due to weathering or deterioration of the buildings. Many have been or are in the process of being restored.

In 2015, a new mural depicting Steubenville natives Edwin McMasters Stanton and David Homer Bates with President Abraham Lincoln in the War Office Telegraph Room was created by artist Ruston Baker. Mr. Baker is now preparing two new murals to be completed by the fall of 2018.

Funding for these remarkable works of art flow from charitable grants, fundraising and receipts from the city’s lodging tax. Donations to fund this project are always welcome!
