Some might be surprised to hear that during Spina Bifida Awareness Month, I want people to look past the diagnosis and instead focus on the amazing individuals who live with it. When you search for Spina Bifida, you'll find an overwhelming amount of information. Much of it sounds frightening, daunting, and hard to process. The truth is, it can be all of that—scary, overwhelming, and daunting at times. However, that isn’t the entire story.

What I really want people to understand is that Spina Bifida doesn’t define a person. It’s just one part of a much bigger picture. I want people to see beyond the label and notice the strength, joy, and remarkable traits that shine despite the challenges. The resilience and determination of someone with Spina Bifida tell a far more powerful story than any diagnosis ever could.

Yes, Spina Bifida is part of our sweet girl’s story, but she is so much more than a diagnosis. First and foremost, she is Amelie. Her favorite color is pink. She’s a total mama’s girl. Nothing makes her happier than being outdoors. She can be wonderfully stubborn at times. Best of all is her heart. She feels deeply and extends a compassion to others like I've never seen before. I just wish people could see her the way I do… she really is nothing short of spectacular.
