🤠 For National Mascot Day we're celebrating the legendary Pistol Pete, Oklahoma State University's iconic cowboy mascot! Inspired by real-life area resident Frank "Pistol Pete" Eaton, our beloved Pistol Pete was voted Best Collegiate Mascot in ESPN's 2010 poll. A few fun facts about our favorite mascot:

⭐ Frank Eaton was the living mascot for about 30 years, bringing spirit to Oklahoma State Athletics home games and local events.

⭐ Pistol Pete replaced Oklahoma A&M’s original tiger mascot in 1923 after Frank Eaton was the hit of that year’s Armistice Day Parade.

⭐ The first Pistol Pete merchandise including pennants, notebooks and t-shirts hit the shelves in 1930.

⭐ After Eaton's passing in 1958, Charlie Lester donned the first papier-mâché head to keep Pete’s legacy alive.

⭐ In 1970, Disney Imagineer Bob Johnson crafted two fiberglass heads for Pete, insured for $20,000 each!

⭐ Local milliner Lillie Solomon began upgrading and lightening Pete's head in 1977.

⭐ Pete’s costume historically didn’t include spurs for fear that they would damage the Gallagher-Iba Arena floor. But in 2002, modified spurs were donated and added to the mascot’s costume.

⭐ In 2019, the heavy fiberglass heads were replaced with sleek carbon fiber ones.

Stillwater is proud to be the original home of Red Dirt Music! The entire genre was born right here in the 1980s, when icons like Bob Childers, the Red Dirt Rangers, Garth Brooks, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Jimmy LaFave, and many more gathered to play at a 150-acre plot of land on the outskirts of town called "The Farm." The rented farmhouse on the property became a hub of musicians and artists indulging in constant parties and jam sessions – especially in the garage, which became known as the "Gypsy Cafe."

First opened in 1928, the Crystal Plunge welcomed thousands of families to cool off each summer. Located on E 6th Street right behind the Stillwater Milling Company grain elevator, this pool was one of the area's most popular attractions.
