Prior to beginning the annual women’s walking pilgrimage to Chartres, France, I was invited to Villefranche-sur-Mer on the French Riviera to paint a labyrinth on a rooftop patio.

Over dinner the evening before the conversation included a decision on what labyrinth design to use. Originally I had suggested a 3-circuit option for the petite 3 meter wide space. As we conversed, the villa owner became interested instead on my dual path Harmony/Conflict Resolution pattern. This is what was ultimately chosen.

I created this 21ft portable labyrinth for dual purposes. It can be used as a cover to protect the newly painted floor labyrinth I installed at the cathedral in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, when that transept space is needed for musicians and chairs. The portable labyrinth can also be used by members of the local labyrinth community to offer labyrinth walks and events at other locations around the city.

Long day of labyrinth building today with a group of volunteers at Bellarmine Jesuit Retreat House in Barrington, Illinois. We constructed a 9-circuit Chartres variation embedding pavers into the existing turf. The labyrinth sits on a knoll and in anchored by old oak trees aligned at each quadrant turn. Bird song, butterflies, whitetail deer, and bunnies accompanied us as we worked. We love volunteer projects! We bring all tools, instruction and supervision and a fun day of creativity is enjoyed by all.

We completed the labyrinth for a private residence in St. Peter, MN. This petite 22ft diameter, 5-circuit round Classical labyrinth fits snuggly in a gorgeous garden surround that was just waiting for a labyrinth! Flowers, dragonflies, and butterflies were welcome companions as we worked, unlike the mosquitoes and gnats that are apparently in excess due to the recent flooding of the nearby Minnesota River. The heat and humidity also challenged the project.
The steeple of the Gustavus Adolphus College chapel is visible from the labyrinth and the chapel bells can be heard ringing.

Our process:
The site is dowsed and the orientation determined.
We carefully measure and lay the pavers in the precise locations.
We work in tandem cutting the turf with edgers on two sides of the paver, breaking the roots.
The pavers are then set aside while long 6-8ft snakes of turf are removed.
Sand is added to the newly made trenches before the pavers are permanently set.
Minimal paver cutting was required with this pattern. We completed in 15 hours, just myself and partner Denny.

The labyrinth project I started on World Labyrinth Day is now completed! This was an installation for a private residence in White Bear Lake, MN. As it was a local project, we were able to work a few hours at a time, dancing around storms and heat during this rainy spring season.

This labyrinth is 23 feet in diameter and is a Baltic Tree pattern that I also call the Tree of Wisdom. The spiral-based Baltic labyrinth patterns are graceful and date back many centuries. They are unique in that they include a secondary path to/from the center. For this project I modified the space between the entrance paths to produce a tree image.

On this project I used crescent-shaped pavers which are great fun to work with when creating curved lines. The pavers are a generous 5.75 inches wide.

I had a lovely week in France recently, exploring new pilgrimage paths in anticipation of the September walking pilgrimage from Paris to Chartres.

I also had the opportunity to visit the spectacular town of Villefranche-sur-Mer on the French Riviera where I was invited to discuss plans for a future installation of a rooftop labyrinth with a breathtaking view overlooking the harbor. I tested out materials making a small spiral so we can see how it withstands the intense summer heat and sunlight.

I spent World Labyrinth Day measuring and marking out a new labyrinth in a client’s backyard. In coming weeks crescent shaped pavers will be embedded to replace the surveyor flags and tape. It is helpful to have a temporary labyrinth to walk while awaiting the permanent installation. In this way the client can take time to "be" with the labyrinth for a couple of weeks, experience the path and be satisfied that it is the right pattern, size and placement for her before the pavers are dug in.

I’ve been commissioned by the Saint John’s Anglican Cathedral in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, to install an indoor labyrinth as part of the 325 year anniversary. The beautiful cathedral was established in 1699.

Today, our first day of the project, I taped the labyrinth pattern onto the floor, all but the center design. The cathedral labyrinth committee members were enthusiastically ready to help and try their hand with the taping machine. Even The Very Reverend was on his knees diligently working. Tomorrow the painting begins!

I had a lovely evening during the Teaching Artists' Showcase at the White Bear Center for the Arts last week offering a demonstration on the process of making finger labyrinths using tissue paper and cording. I made a heart shaped labyrinth during the demonstration that I'm calling Love Letters.
I'll be offering this class again in April at the Arts Center. Information and registration can be found on the website: https://whitebeararts.org/.../fun-functional-finger.../

Blue, purple, green. The majority of canvas labyrinth orders I get are in one of those colors. It’s always fun to step out of “the usual” once in awhile, like with this 30ft brown Chartres labyrinth that had me craving chocolate throughout the construction. Now on its way to sunny LA, California (I hope it doesn’t melt!😉)

So nice to see my work blessed and serving.
