Backcountry fishing in Key West is great for all levels of experience, especially for kids. The mangrove islands, flats, channels, and basins provide such an amazing variety of species to target while being able to fish comfortably even on windier days. It’s amazing how you can either challenge yourself or entertain yourself based on what you’re fishing for. Thomas and Issac decided they wanted to do both and they had one of, if not, the best kids trips I’ve ever ran. We caught a wide variety of species including snappers, little groupers, grunts, jacks, two Goliath groupers, a Cobia, and a baby tarpon that spit the hook as we touched the leader. I love being apart of trips like these knowing these families will talk about them for the rest of their lives

Only a couple more big moon phases before our Permit start to pre spawn! Spring is a great time to pursue them on the Flats & Backcountry before they head off to the Reef to spawn. This super skittish fish is more like hunting than fishing and provides an absolute rush from start to finish. Light tackle & accurate casting combined with super picky & hard fighting fish. Doesn’t get much better than that!
