1/14/25 Richland Chambers

This morning I fished with Rusty who is a part time guide on RC and also one of the guides that donates a morning of fishing for our CAST For Kids along with sourcing the tables and chairs for the event.

We left my dock a little after 10am and set out to find hybrid stripers - the plan was for me to not go where I usually do and find fish in new areas.
Some of the areas today I have never fished in the winter, and some I had.
We found one area I will definitely put on my look here list.

We fished 4 areas today all areas were fished from 35-45 FOW

Area one and two had non aggressive fish - we (meaning I) caught a few keeper hybrid stripers which allowed me to trash talk Rusty for a while, offering to hand him my pole with a drag stripping hybrid on it. He refused😂. He caught fish, but not keepers.

Then we pulled into area 3 - it was pretty much a smoke show here for quite a while. These fish were so aggressive even Rusty was able to catch them. 😂😂
Eventually they left us and we needed to move.

Area 4 - started out with another smoke show but it didn’t last as long as area 3

We boated and released at least 20 keeper hybrid stripers today and a good amount of white bass

1/12/25 Richland Chambers

This morning I picked up Bobby and Billy at Oak Cv Marina. This father/son team fished with me 2 weeks ago and said they didn’t need to keep anymore fish, but needed to catch more! I said catch and release is my specialty!
We left the dock about 9:30 - they showed up 30 minutes early so off we went….I would have just been tied to the dock waiting anyways.

Today was a lot like yesterdays trip - first two hours there was only a few keeper hybrids - the last 2hrs there was plenty! Short hybrids and white bass were caught through out the trip but the quality fish came in the later part of our trip.

Our first area we fished 23-56’. Smallest fish were shallow here - fish were not very aggressive. One good size blue cat caught here (on artificial bait)

2nd area we fished 36-46’. Non aggressive fish here as well. Caught some, but I didn’t like what I was seeing on sonar…..so off we went.

3rd area - small fish but more aggressive 31-44’ here
(Wind shift was about complete when we left here)

4th area - 49’ and we didn’t move
Lots of fish here - due to this being a catch and release trip we paused to take pictures of the hybrid stripers …. While they continued to pass under the boat. I would snap a picture and yell get your lure back down - fish there!
We stayed here a good hour before the fish left us.

We looked at 2 other areas and I didn’t see much so I told them we were gonna try a place I haven’t been this season - set up in 39’ and I proceeded to hook into something big almost instantly - line started stripping and Billy was making his way to get the rod ….. and the fish spit the hook 😞
This was by far the biggest … or at least the strongest fish of the day - nothing screamed out drag like this one did…..heartbreaker!

I made the ‘y’all need to catch one more and we are done’ - didn’t take long and we were back at the dock.

I really enjoy fishing with this crew - excitement level on every fish is off the chart! Makes me feel good that I can provide that excitement! They boated and released some quality size hybrid stripers and giant white bass!

Never saw a 50 degree water temp today …..48-49 on the surface today

1/11/25 Richland Chambers

Today I had planned to hang with the wife, but at 10am I got a call asking if I was available today.
I told them be here at noon!

At noon I met Nory and Aaron at my dock - Aaron was the driving force behind this trip and I could tell he was ready to go!

Our first area, second area and third area had plenty of fish, but they didn’t want to play.
Our fourth stop was 42’ and we put the Zman Streakz down.
45 minutes later the hybrid limit was done. White bass aren’t where they should be yet, but should be soon.
We spent the rest of the trip catching one here and there, but never got on them good….soon they will be consistent.

Monday Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday are open and the winds are light.
Dead sticking is the tactic I am using now. We will catch lots of fish!

1/8/25 Richland Chambers

For all my people I have been putting off that wanted deadsticking - it’s time!!

Winds layed down a bit, so I decided to go check things out. Cabin fever was setting in. Left the dock around 2pm and just cruised around looking at different areas. I was surprised to see fish still shallow, but I wasn’t after them so I kept looking.

Found them where I expected right on one of my winter time waypoints.
Set up and started pulling them over the side. I don’t keep or measure fish when I fish alone. Looked like a lot of 17-18” fish but there were a few ‘no doubters’ there. Ones you don’t need a ruler to know they are legal fish.
I left these fish biting to look at other areas

Area #2 set up in 47’ and pulled in a limit of ‘no doubters’ and left them biting - not near as many fish here, but all good size fish - all keepers!

Rough day all around!

This morning I picked up Joseph and kids at Oak Cv Marina at 10am.
I warned them it was rough out there and I was assured the boys were tough and could handle it. So we set out in search of hybrid stripers and white bass. (I would never put running a trip over safety my boat can handle much worse…but I can’t😂, this was as rough of water as I want to fish in!)

It took a bit but we made it to some smooth water on the lake only to find only small fish there, and they were not aggressive. The winds died off just a bit and we went into the rougher waters - found our first keeper hybrid striper and a few good size white bass. These fish showed very little aggression as well so we kept searching.

Our next stop had good fish, but I couldn’t get the boys timing right and they were having a good time regardless so after trying to get them to set the hook at the right time I grabbed a rod and hooked a few fish and handed the pole off to Boone (youngest) who handled them with ease…….not really ease, but he got them in.

We made our final move into smoother waters as I was beat up from just trying to keep my balance in the waves. Here we put some good quality white bass in the cooler.

We went back to my dock to clean fish (smoothest water on the lake)
When I was done cleaning fish I asked with fingers crossed “Do you want me to drive y’all back to Oak Cv by truck or brave the rough water?”
Well fingers crossed didn’t work and back into the boat we went 😂

Rough waters/ tough fishing / young crew had me doing everything I could to put these guys on fish, but I couldn’t get it done😞
I had been on a roll, but got humbled today. I hated writing this report!
Cold weather coming and that should make the fish go where they should already be, but aren’t. I will go check on that after the cold snap.

1/3/25 Richland Chambers

This morning I picked up Josue and family at Oak Cv Marina at 9:30 for a morning of ripping lips.

We pulled into area 1 and set up in 28’. Within 15 minutes we had 5 keeper hybrids in the cooler and a few white bass …. Then it went quiet. We moved around this area for the first 2.5hrs and had 12 hybrids in cooler along with 25 white bass. We fished area one from from 23-36’

Area two - made a few white bass stops before finding the mother load of hybrids - put 8 in the cooler quick like in 38’ finishing out their hybrid striper limits.

They chose to target white bass instead of catch and release hybrids. So we made a big move and fished area 3 from 21-26’
We put another 15 or so white bass in the cooler before our time was up.

When it was over they had 20 hybrid stripers, 56 white bass and 2 blue cats.

Birthday fishing and it was awesome!

This morning I met returning guests Chris, Asher, and Elias at my dock at 10am. This crew fished with me in late November and Asher thought fishing for his birthday was a great idea, so they made the 2.5hr drive from the Austin area to fish with me again.

We made our way to one of the areas I planned to fish today …. It ended up being the only area we fished. Our first stop was small fish so we made a short move and then Asher managed to put the biggest fish of the day in the cooler - it was a football! We made short moves throughout the trip, never more than 100yards or so. Each time we would put another fat hybrid striper in the cooler, but rarely more than 1 or 2 before we had to move again.

That was how the first 3 hours went - and during the first 3 hours they put their 15 keepers in the cooler along with 40 or so huge white bass…..but it was work to get them to bite.
Fish quality today was excellent and we lost 2 fish that took off ripping drag and then spitting the hook - but they were serious fish!

Then the last hour the fish rose from the bottom and the birds showed up - it was game on! Chris was casting at boils and Asher and Elias were getting them fishing vertical.
I am not gonna lie I was worried about Elias losing a rod, but he was a champ and caught and reeled a good amount of keeper hybrids and white bass.
Asher was pretty much on fire and out fished the rest of the crew hands down - the most and the biggest.
We stopped putting fish in the cooler when the lid didn’t close anymore - but kept catching and releasing them until trips end.

When it was over they took home 4.5 gallons of filets.

12/31/24 Richland Chambers

Ending the year right with a father / son in law catch and release trip.

This morning I picked up Bill and Chris at Oak Cv Marina. After fixing a bad switch to my network equipment that worked 24hrs ago, we left about 9am in search of hybrid stripers. We made it to our first area, saw good things and I anchor locked us in 43’.

Bill has fished with me in the past and knew what to do, so while I was getting Chris set up Bill was catching fish. I got Chris all set with how and when and he started pulling in fish as well. We caught 4 keepers here, a few shorts and good sized white bass. This was by far the most aggressive fish I have seen this winter.
Once they slowed we moved around this area and put another keeper or two in front of the camera.
After a while the fish disappeared and we made a big move.

2nd area (big area) we fished 30-40’ ran from the white bass when they would move in and put another 5 keeper hybrids in front of the camera before releasing them.

3rd area was mainly short hybrids (17.5” not the usual 12-14” shorts) but a few keepers from here as well.

4th area - I just wanted them to catch one more fish before calling it a day and getting ready for the evening celebrations. They accomplished my goal and I dropped them off at their dock as requested (wind forecast didn’t hold true or I would have picked them up and dropped them off at their dock)

They managed almost 3 limits of hybrids and probably close to a two man limit of white bass. Most of the white bass were excellent quality but there were some tiny ones mixed in as well.

Water warmed up considerably after yesterday’s 80 degree day

Cold snap headed this way and it should kick the dead stick bite back into action.

This morning I picked up Bobby and Billy for a fun morning of father / son hybrid striper fishing.
We left Oak Cove Marina at 9am in thick fog once again.
The first 2 hrs was either fog or very low cloud ceiling letting no sun shine through.

First area we moved around quite a bit as I didn’t want to go far because it’s the weekend (more traffic) and I couldn’t see very far in the fog.
We fished this area in depths from 21-38’. We had zero double hookups, but 1 by 1 they put keeper hybrid stripers in the cooler. I am gonna give props to Billy, he put on a clinic today catching fish after fish …. Some good ones, and some tiny ones, but he was on them!
They finished out their hybrid limits in our first area just after we started seeing blue skies.

They opted not to play catch and release and move to target white bass. Our second area we set up in 19’ and as I told them to drop them I cracked a smile …. Those weren’t white bass. They both hooked up and landed keeper hybrids which were released😎
We caught a few keeper whites here but most were small so we moved to area 3

We moved around area three a bit but found our best size fish in 26’
We returned to my dock to clean fish and they added another 5-7 catfish to the table that they caught off my dock. Bagged up their fish and dropped them back off at the dock at Oak Cv.
We all had a blast and I enjoyed their excitement every time the drag started ripping or the rod was ‘bent in a U’. Good times, good guys!

This morning I decided to start a bit earlier due to recent results …. It back fired a bit due to thick fog😞

I picked up returning guests Jeff, Rick and Katie from their dock at 8am and we set out in search of hybrid stripers. This was a catch and release trip. We drove through the fog and set up in 27’. We caught a few small hybrids and I saw what I normally see in heavy fog - inactive fish.

We left this area after 30 minutes or so without catching many fish.
Our 2nd stop produced a few keepers - typically every time the sun would come through the fog someone hooked up. Then the fog would sock us in again and the fish would stop biting.

We moved again and the fog lifted - set up in 25’ and proceeded to land keeper after keeper. We would have more than likely caught more fish if we didn’t pause to take pictures as schools of hybrids were hanging out below the boat - but they were having a good time and at this point my job was done - the rest of the trip was just icing on the cake. Company started to show up around us so we left.

Searched another area and caught 1 keeper there, watched the ‘company’ leave where we were - so we went back there and boated another limits worth.

Made a stop on the way to drop them off and caught 2 more keepers. Dropped them off at their dock - wished them a happy New Year and called it another great trip on RC with a great group!

12/23/24 Richland Chambers

This morning I was joined by Mike and John who drove from the Austin area to fish with me. They have fished with me in the past a few times, Decker, Belton and Buchanan I believe, but never been to Richland Chambers. I told them this lake was far superior to the central Texas lakes and I needed to prove it.

We left my dock at 10am and pulled into our first area. I found some fish on sonar, got everything set up and started putting keeper hybrids in the cooler - it was fast action, back to back to back keepers - 5 in the cooler in just a few minutes and then ……….. gone. This was in mid 30’s FOW. We moved around this area a bit and picked up another keeper and a few whites and a crappie. I wasn’t seeing what I wanted and decided to, so we braved the rough water to see if we could do better. I had hoped to stay on the south side all morning to avoid the high winds.

Center of the lake and the wind and waves were a bit to much for my trolling motor - we could stay somewhat anchor locked, but the boat was surging and then recovering from over shooting - so back to the first area.

Picked up 2 more keepers here and the winds died down a bit so we went back to area #2 - picked up one more keeper here.

I was somewhat frustrated with what I was seeing and what was actually happening - saw lots of fish that would follow a lure for 20’ and then turn away, never striking ….. so we made a big move into rougher waters

3rd area - I planned to do some white bass cooler stocking here, so we set up on a huge school and started putting whites in the cooler - then our final hybrid hit the cooler and as I was carrying fish to the cooler I hear Mike say “here comes a giant school”. And then he hooks up, and seconds later John hooks up and seconds later the ghost rod gets smoked too- landed all 3 of those (released) and it was kind of a tangled mess so I told them to just grab a different rod - and they both caught a few more keepers we released while I I untangled lines and released fish

Trip ended as it started - ON FIRE 🔥! But everything inbetween was not very active fish.
