Recommended "thing to do #84" in our favorite little Door County guidebook tells us to "Hike the Boardwalk at The Ridges Sanctuary, Inc." This is a gorgeous and peaceful spot - AND - it is also Wisconsin's first land trust. You can keep to the boardwalk for a quick and easy walk, or if you have more time, explore the trails among the ridges, visit the nature center, and/or cross the highway to get to the gorgeous sandy beach.

Location: 8166 Highway 57 in Baileys Harbor. Be sure to pick up a trail map for a list of their native flowering plants and information about the sanctuary.

Entry #7 in our favorite Door County guidebook recommends, "Tap your toes to a concert at the Creek Music Performance Center Barn." We finally checked out Birch Creek last year and are planning on going every summer! They have 8 weeks of summer concerts, ranging from Percussion/Steel Pan/World Music to Symphony to Big Band Jazz. The concerts take place in a beautiful old barn!

This fun venue is just a few miles east of Egg Harbor. Buy tickets for a summer performance and enjoy the amazing music. (Tip: the Fourth of July concert includes a free pie and ice cream social!)

In our family's favorite guidebook, "101 Things to Do in Door County," entry #70 introduced us to The Farm. We've visited this gem every year for at least the last decade! It's a great spot for kids (they can feed a bottle to a lamb, find a kitten, toss some corn to a cute cow, and help milk a goat) but it's just as fun for adults. There are lots of historic buildings and equipment, beautiful gardens, and a peaceful walking trail through the woods. Stop in from mid-May to mid-October and make some memories!

About 15 years ago, our family purchased the book, "101 Things to Do in Door County," and it immediately became our primary reference source for planning new adventures. The book lists many off-the-beaten-path spots, while also covering the more well-known places. One of our favorite entries is #1 - Ellison Bluff County Park. In addition to the stunning view, there's a lovely walking loop (about a mile total - great for kids!) and a picnic area.

Online searches have now replaced much of the "paper research" we used to do, but it is always fun to page through our original guide, written by a Door County enthusiast.

No matter the time of year, the “nook” at Three Little Birds is a guest favorite. Take a nap, read a book, tell stories to the kids, do some journaling…there are so many options! Queen size mattress: sleeps one comfortably; sleeps two if you’re not too tall! Blinds and curtains provide a nice amount of privacy. Enjoy!

We enjoyed this nice little hike at White Cliff Nature Preserve/Door County Land Trust. The trails were well marked and suitable for young or old (just watch for tree roots and rocks). The nearby cranes were making themselves heard! Happy to report zero mosquitos today 😄
Location: 8248 White Cliff Road in Egg Harbor. It’s a cute road to drive and/or walk and the trail is just minutes from downtown Egg Harbor.

This was our first visit to the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Nature Preserve, but it won’t be our last! It’s about a 2-1/2 mile hike and can be easily completed in under an hour, even with several stops to take in the scenery.

This is Woolly - he hangs out in Sturgeon Bay's Bayview Park. Woolly celebrates the Ice Age Trail's eastern terminus, which is located just outside of town in Potawatomi State Park. If you walk along the scenic waterfront trail from Woolly toward Otumba Park, you can tell people that you actually hiked part of the Ice Age Trail!

Newport State Park gets a lot of attention for its Dark Sky Park designation. It's also a fantastic place to visit during daylight hours! This weekend we hiked one of our favorite areas - the Hotz Trail and Europe Bay Loop. We had the trail entirely to ourselves. So beautiful!

It was a beautiful weekend for a hike at Whitefish Dunes State Park. The views from the top of "Old Baldy" were fantastic. The dog beach was busy --- lots of friends were enjoying the summer-like weather.

is a great example of why not to overlook Sturgeon Bay on your next visit to Door County. There is so much to explore: hiking/skiing trails, a learning center, heritage village, family events, astronomy campus, kayak launch, EV chargers, and more! Leashed dogs are welcome on the walking paths. The main campus is north of the "big bridge" at 2041 Michigan Street, just east of Highway 42/57.
