The nine-day gun deer season, which starts this Saturday, Nov. 23, is a big deal in Wisconsin for reasons deeply rooted in the traditions of the state. Here are a few of those:

Hunting tradition: Wisconsin has a strong tradition of hunting, dating back generations. Many families pass down hunting traditions from parents to children, making it a significant event. However, you don’t need to claim a tradition to go hunting. Anyone can participate!

Wildlife management: The deer population in certain parts of Wisconsin can have negative impacts on ecosystems and agriculture. Hunting, particularly during the gun season, helps regulate the deer population.

Social gathering: For many, the opening weekend of gun deer season is a time to gather with friends and family at deer camps or cabins. It's a social event as much as it is about hunting.

Culinary tradition: Venison is a popular meat in Wisconsin. Many hunters look forward to harvesting deer for food. It's a way for people to connect with nature and their food sources.
