gets very rare this week with not only one of the rarest formations one can find in Jewel Cave, but any cave in the world. Meet our hydromagnesite balloons!

It's believed these rare formations come about as calcite crystallizes from water dripping in the cave, magnesium becomes very concentrated in the remaining water. If enough water evaporates, hydromagnesite will form from precipitating magnesium, which can then possibly inflate to form these pearly white balloons. They are very delicate, with the hydromagnesite being only a couple thousandths of an inch thick.

Hydromagnesite balloons are not found commonly anywhere. Even in Jewel Cave, the only place to be able to see them regularly is on our strenuous Wild Caving Tour. That being said, because they are on that tour, that makes Jewel Cave National Monument one of the very few places where they can be seen on a cave tour in the world!

We absolutely LOVE this house!! This is our second time renting it and it just felt like home!! It has EVERYTHING we needed and more! Charlie is the best host and we look forward to renting his house again in the future! Also, do not spend your nights watching tv...playing cards, foosball and the puzzles are always our favorite part of hanging out as a family laughing and catching up!! (We may have to donate one to the house next time because we have now done them both!) Thanks for everything, Charlie!
