The people of Western North Carolina desperately need help. One of those impacted is an integral part of our Sugar Mountain Hideaway family.

Melinda is a paramedic in Avery County who also owns the cleaning company we partner with for our Airbnb at Sugar Mountain. She is not only a first responder and an amazing business partner, but a great friend. Our Airbnb is successful because of her.

Her home sat next to the Elk River in Banner Elk.

On Friday, flood waters overtook her home, pulling it downstream while she was still inside. She was sucked out of her house while it was in motion, and dragged over a mile down river before she was able to grab onto a tree to stay afloat. She hung onto this tree for over TWO hours before she was finally rescued. By the grace of God she survived. Unfortunately, nothing else of hers did.

She has lost everything - her home, her car, and, sadly, her three dogs who were with her right before the flood took her house.

If you want to help those in Western North Carolina, please consider donating to this GoFundMe that her daughter and son-in-law have put together to help Melinda get back on her feet. I know there are many worthy causes circulating right now, but this has the ability for you to make a direct impact to someone in desperate need.

Ski season is here 🎉❄️

Today, 8-22 inches of man-made powder and frozen granular snow coat five of Sugar’s twenty trails. Skiable slopes include Easy Street, Northridge, Switchback, and Upper and Lower Flying Mile. The Summit Express chairlift, which runs to the mountain’s peak, and the Easy Street chairlift are spinning. Wintry weather is in the forecast throughout the week, so skiers and snowboarders can anticipate additional terrain and lifts as conditions permit.
The full-day session runs from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The half-day shift begins at 12:30 p.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m. The twilight and night sessions will be available in the coming weeks.

RESORT UPDATE! Snow making begins tonight to whiten the slopes, with opening next week (TBA). This view from last winter shows the ski lodge at the base with places to stay on the mountainside. The magic carpet (lower right) is now covered to give beginners some shelter. Six more automated SMI snow making machines were added. Work is wrapping up on the new Oma’s Meadow high-speed quad lift. Frosty mornings and brand new welcome gifts! ❄️

When we began as hosts last year, we knew we wanted to give our guests a little something to remember their stay at Sugar. Our family has a tradition of collecting ornaments to remember our travels, and we have so much fun every year going through them to reminisce on all the fun we’ve had. What could be better than to give our guests both a little piece of Sugar and a little piece of us at the same time?? So the idea of ornaments as gifts was born ✨😉

Last winter, we gave out traditional glass ball ornaments, and in the spring, we gave out hand painted wooden ornaments - now for our fall and winter stays, I think we have found the perfect ones 😍

Now bring on the snow! ⛷
