The South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism (SCPRT) has named the Sumter Visitors Center a partner in Discover South Carolina’s Front Porch Program.

The Front Porch Program connects local visitor centers and destination marketing organizations in small towns and big cities all over the state with South Carolina’s bustling state-operated Welcome Centers and the powerful Discover South Carolina brand. The program was created to help local entities amplify their reach to attract more visitation.

Certified Front Porch program participants share information, promote special events, and provide SCPRT with up-to-date information about their destinations. This allows SCPRT’s nine Welcome Centers to share the latest and greatest information available about our destinations with our millions of visitors, helping increase visitation to those areas and improving visitor experience upon arrival. Program members receive an official window cling and certificate to promote their participation in the program; bulk copies of state maps and the Discover South Carolina Vacation Guide; and access to special training and events hosted by SCPRT’s expert travel staff.

The Sumter Visitor's Center, located on the grounds of the world-famous Swan Lake Iris Gardens, is home to the Sumter Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) Office, whose mission is to identify and evaluate all sources of present and future tourism, and to make every effort to encourage, promote, advertise and foster the growth of tourism throughout the private and public sectors.

Sumter is a growing city that is rich in history, culture, and recreation, offering visitors numerous parks, a vibrant arts scene, and plenty of sites and museums to explore.

Because of increased demand for Millford Plantation tours, they are adding another day of tours on June 8. Tickets for June 8 are now available on the website for the usual 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 2:30 pm tour times. The home will be closed in July and August for maintenance (and the heat!), so this will be the last chance to visit Millford before the Fall.

Every ticket this spring was sold out, so these tours may fill quickly.

It was a gorgeous day to be at our state capital! Sumter Tourism is an annual sponsor of Hospitality Day at the Statehouse and we couldn’t be more proud of our representation in Columbia today and every day.

Tourism staff, Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee members and students and teaching staff from the Sumter Career and Technology Center attended the culinary event today to honor the Sumter Legislative Delegation. Attendees also got to explore inside the facility prior to the event and found the portrait of one of Sumter’s great leaders Mary McLeod Bethune.

Thank you to all who participated! It’s always nice to see our delegation in action. Way to go Sumter!

The Blues. Jazz. R+B. Pop. Funk. Rock. Soul. Folk. Banda. Country. Rap. Choosing the music to close out each scene in the drama “Sweat” was a labor of love for Director Traci Quinn. (Only one transition was prescribed: Santana’s “Smooth.”)

“The scenes begin with a news clip to set the date and economic environment – locally and nationally – and there’s a subtle and sometimes not so subtle focus on how corporate executives, Big Business, politicians and the stock market are impacted by the downward shift in the economy, so I wanted to choose music that would spotlight how that spiral toward recession affected the working class people who frequent the bar that is the setting for most of the scenes in ‘Sweat,’” she said.

“I put on my headphones, took my dog Henry for a long walk and listened to folk songs about labor unions, Latino working class music, blues tunes about being poor and out of work, a little R+B and soul music about he**in addiction, and some heartland rock to match the tone of certain characters. Then I came home and researched for several days, trying to find just the right style and mood for each scene or for a specific line. I wanted to be sure to represent the culture of each of the characters in ‘Sweat,’ to have something that would relate to each pivotal event.”

“Sweat” opens Thursday, Feb. 22, and runs through March 3. Performances are at 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sundays. Purchase tickets here: https://ticketpeak.co/sumterlittletheatre/events/7791-Sweat

Please note that this show includes coarse language and an act of violence and is not suitable for those under 16 without a parent present.
