Sharing the Past

Sunbright Depot 1913 ??

This week I want to share a photo that was sent to me many years ago. It was given to me by Dennis Reagan of Sunbright who told me how he obtained the picture. An unknown person from Nashville was given the picture by someone he met while serving in the armed forces in Germany! This Nashville fellow was just scanning the Internet and saw the town of Sunbright. He looked up information on the town and found that Dennis Reagan was Mayor and that let to his e-mailing the picture to Dennis.
To my knowledge this is the only picture of the depot, at least the only one I have found, since I began doing the Sharing the Past articles back in 1989.
The fact that the date written on it would indicate that it was made sometime after 1879.
In our history information found in our Heritage of Morgan County, Tennessee, the story about Sunbright states that several years before Morgan County was founded, early settlers moved into the lands of the White Oak and Boone (Bone) Camp Watershed and their mountain stream tributaries.
The mountains surrounding were the place where the most food could be harvested with the least effort. Everything had to come from the land.
The area was first called Pine Top, probably because of the thick pine population that covered the countryside. The first postmaster of Pine Top was Benjamin Toliver Staples. It was in his honor the town was renamed Stapleton. This name held on until the coming of the railroad about 1877-79, when it was changed to Sunbright.
So, from the above information we could guess that the date on the picture was correct. Dennis told me that he was told the old depot was located near the old coal tipple where the coal was processed. This would have been on the south end of Sunbright.
